Baroness Shirley Williams R.I.P. 12:00 - Apr 13 with 793 viewsLogman

Very saddened to read that Shirley Williams passed away on the weekend. She was a true socialist and an honourable politician who put today's show ponies to shame.

I had the pleasure of meeting her a few times. A very nice women but I don’t think she’d appreciate being called a Socialist.

For those who live in NW London she was the first MP on the scene at Grunwick, well ahead of many TU endorsed MPs in a Labour government at the time.

Incredibly steadfast in her principles even if you don’t agree with them. Condolences to her family.

It was an incredible achievement for the SDP/Lib Alliance to be polling similar numbers to Thatcher's Tories and gaining a large percentage of the votes in the '83 General Election. Unfortunately for them, it wasn't converted to MPs, due to first past the post, and they all went back to being, in effect, the Liberal party.
