Norway v Scotland
at 11:53 18 Jun 2023

I can't understand the level of vitriol Lyndon Dykes gets on this messageboard. OK, so he's not the world's greatest goalscorer but I think he always offers 100 oer cent for the club.

Yesterday, his sublime lay-off for Scotland's second goal reminded me of a similar exquisite touch by Adel Taraabt for Wright-Phillips to score against Chelsea.

Off up to Scotland on Tuesday for the game v Georgia. Another bit of skill like that from Dykes will do me fine.

QP and Eze

As a Glaswegian who sold programmes at Hampden Park as a kid and supported Queen's Park, I still like to keep a watch on their progress, especially as, since they turned professional a few years ago, they seem to be rising up through the leagues (they're now second in the Championship)

I see their winner yesterday was scored by a Stephen Eze. Not sure if there is any family link but he does have the same hair style!

Sound and vision on Saturday
at 15:43 27 Jul 2021

I wrote to the club re the PA system and player shirt numbers on Saturday. Here's what I wrote and what they said (very quickly) in response:

I loved the game on Saturday and hope it augurs well for the new season.
However, sitting in the South Africa Road Stand (Block F, Row L, no 175/176), the sound system was terrible, which meant it was very difficult to hear what was being said, let alone know who all the subs were in the second half. I hope that will be fixed in time for the Millwall game.
Also, while I love the new strip, I feel the numbers on the players' backs are far from clear. Would they not stand out better in, say, red?

And the club replied:

Many thanks for your email.
I have sent your email over to our Operations team for their attention. We are aware there were some issues with the sound system, and we are working to rectify the issues before the Leicester game.
We are also aware that the numbers were unclear on the back of the shirts on Saturday. This was due to the position of the numbers without names on the back. We have reprinted some shirts with names and numbers positioned slightly lower and the numbers are now a lot clearer.

I see Eberichi Eze's brother, Chima, plays for the Under 18s team. Anyone know if he is anywhere as good as his brother?

Rs in Philadelphia

Having cocked up my arrangements for this weekend and having to travel to Philadelphia, I've finally found a pub showing the game--the Tir Na Nog on Archer. Any other Rs going to be there?

Book worth reading

Very little, apart from one reference to telling a player to effectively "go out and run around a bit" (would have to plough through the book again to get the precise quote).

Book worth reading

Some more thoughts on that book....

It highlights how Redknapp has operated the same way over the years. The more I read it, the more my heart sank at the thought of him still being there next season. If nothing else, it should be required reading for every member of the board to let them know what they've let themselves (and the club) in for.

Book worth reading

I am getting rather fed up with Harry Redknapp slagging off the QPR players. I have just finished reading the book "Harry's Games" by John Crace -- about Harry Redknapp -- and the quotes on Page 165 re Southampton players all seem rather familiar. "Would be a terrific achievement to stay up...toughest job I've taken on....have to beg, steal and borrow a few players because this group could not even get us out of the Championship...this club has accumulated a lot of players but we are short of quality". I wasn't overwhelmed when he came to QPR but his lack of success since then and his continued criticism of the players (nothing to do with me, guv) have made me even less enthusiastic about him. Wasn't it his job to motivate the players he had and sort out the problems? I've been a supporter since 1974 but cannot honestly say I am particularly looking forward to next season under his "leadership" -- more players in and out, just as he has done at West Ham, Southampton, Portsmouth, with no great attempt to think long-term and develop youth players and bring them through.
