Looking after Ingham
at 18:55 18 Aug 2018

No point in saying anything more about the game. But I will say this, it's very important that Ingham is looked after, after this result and we the fans - not such much on the pitch , but especially on Social Media - must play a big part in it. He is a young man, just making his way in the game and something like this could break him.
I remember years and years ago we beat Burnley 7-1. They had a young man called Billy O Rourke (I think) who was making his debut and he was distraught afterwards. I wouldn't have much knowledge about Burnley back then, but I don't think he made much of a career out of it. I discovered to my shock a couple of years ago on one of Clive's 'games in History' pieces that he died a young man.
Not suggesting there was a connection between the thrashing and his death, but am categorically saying that Ingham must be protected over the next days and weeks and given a chance to get over this huge set-back right at the start of his career. We must resist the temptation to vent our frustration at him (and indeed Kakay too) over the result. Some of the things said to Karius after the Champions League final were absolutely disgusting and we must ensure we don't go down that road. He and the whole team need our support more than ever.

MATCH THREAD - WEST BROM

In defence of the lad he has had a horrific time with injuries, so you are probably right about needing a run of games to prove himself or not whatever the case may be. Whether he gets that run of games if Thorne comes in, Hall gets fit or Routledge comes in and Freeman plays more centrally, remains to be seen.
Speaking of run of games, disappointing for me to see Sylla benched again. Very difficult to establish yourself if out, in, out every other game

Probably time to wrap up this tread - he's gone until Jan at least.
Just two final points. Versatile as the man is, he could not cover at right-back. He is left footed and unless you're Dennis Irwin or Joey Jones or the club is down to the bare bones not a good idea to play on the wrong side of your defence. Different going forward as you can either double back on your strong foot, or cut inside for a shot.
But you are right about having loads of cover for central mid-field, just feel that manning was closer to first team action than some of the other back-ups. Let's hope he comes back a better player or it really would have been pointless
(What do you mean that's FOUR final points? Ok, ok I'm going)

Is this the same kind of thing that Glenn Hoddle used to be involved in back in the day?

I think without a doubt Hall is earmarked for that job if ever fit. To be fair to Holloway, he intended Hall to be the ball carrying DM when going forward and the 3rd CB when defending. It is quite possible we would never even have signed Scowen if Hall had remained fit

Not sure I agree with you Brian about Ryan not being ready in training or e would have played more over last 18 months. You only have to look at the way he played at Villa to know he was fully up to speed, I'd simply say it was down ton the form of Scowen, Freeman and Luongo last season. The arrival of Eze on the scene plus the change of formation to a back four has effectively pushed Washington off the pitch and sent Freeman out wider but this has not created a position for Manning as BOS/Smyth are occupying the other wide position.
I still think it is unwise to let him go as he first choice if any of the above are unavailable/ineffective /out of form. I don't buy into the condemnation of Luongo after 2 games but he could potentially be suffering from the psychological blow of not getting any game time in the world cup. It's ironic that we gave him extra time off before the world cup to prevent him being lethargic when he came back and he seems to be more effected by a lack of game time than by being tired from playing. Certainly not an issue after 2 games but if it persisted for 10,, then Manning was the man to step in IMO. Also might lead to some complacency among the central midfielders if a main competitor for their position is removed.
I get the whole game-time needed for his development, but to me he is too close to the first team for this to be relevant. He is pretty sure of game time (albeit not starting) in most games, which I think not only would develop him sufficiently, but he would be exposed to our training ideas day in day out . Anyway too late now, but not convinced it is a good idea.

Think we got to the 3rd round a couple of years ago when the legendary Sandro made it his personal mission to win it in our golden jubilee year. Sadly, some bloke from Sunderland, who had never score before or since, bagged 2 to send us packing

Might get him back as cover now that Manning has gone out on loan - still in his prime according to his birth cert

Not so sure about this, he's left footed. Joined originally from Galway as a left-winger. He is versatile I agree, but don't think he's moving out cos Rangel has moved in

If Routledge comes in it's the death knell for Pav whatever nice noises McClaren is making today. As stated previously much less keen on this than Rangel, because we have experienced right wingers already. 'Want's to come but stalling on wages' has an all to familiar pong I'm afraid

Have to say I'm disappointed with this. I agree that fringe players with little or no prospect of game time should go out on loan to aid their development. But Ryan doesn't fall into that category IMO. His versatility ensures he can fill in for several different positions and indeed has done so already. To me he is right on the cusp of being a first team regular, I really hoped that under McClaren this would be his breakthrough season. Clearly not going to happen now - disappointing

Excellent post Planet. I agree with all that. Feel obliged to add the caveat that it could be a cynical exercise in quelling the negativity surrounding another popular figures (Holloway's) departure and it is a shame he didn't acknowledge the work Olli did over the previous 2 years. But sometimes even cynical moves work even if not for the reasons initially intended and there is no doubt with a solid upper-level team of Amit, Hoos and Les we should be strongly led from the top.
Now we to turn our attention to events ON the pitch. We now know exactly where we are with FFP, including the January embargo, so we need to get a couple of players in this week (the areas that need strengthening are well documented) and then we need to all fully back McClaren both on the pitch and on here. I have said many times that I expect a difficult start to the season, as much due to the fixture list as anything else and that is transpiring, but there is no reason to panic at this very early stage. We need a long period of stability if we are serious about drawing a line in the sand and above all, that means backing Steve and the team over the next difficult period. I too believe we will be stronger in 12 months time, but we have some difficult bumps to negotiate first and this is where support, patience and an absence of OTT hysteria are required.
