Can’t believe the goals scored last night by Mbappe count towards the golden boot. England and France had both already been eliminated from the competition, why should a glorified exhibition match count when neither team gave a toss about the game? |

So we’ve still never beaten an elite nation in a World Cup knock-out phase game outside of England. |

When we pressed them high up the pitch for the first hour we restricted them to hardly any chances. as soon as we scored. Eleven players defending our penalty area, they hit the post twice, Pickford is having to makes saves, and they score two. Garbage way to go out, we lost it as soon as we went ahead. Oh well, we’d have lost to Spain in all likelihood anyway. But what an opportunity missed. |

I met Henry Blofeld once, I said to him “your voice is very familiar. Should I know you?” he replied: “only if you listen to test match special my dear old thing”. I’m sure you all know that his dad went to school with Ian Fleming and that’s where the name Blofeld comes from in the bond films. I thought Sky’s original cricket commentary team was second to none, Gower, botham, athers, nasser, Shane warne, Michael holding, and bumble brought so much insight, experience and anecdotes and humour to it. Favourite lines: when bumble was handing over the commentary, “the batsman’s Willey, the commentator’s Holding” (said deliberately that way round) David Gower handing over the commentary: “to take you through to lunch, it’s Sir Ian Botham, and Mister Nasser Hussain’, such a subtle dig, I got to tell Gower this once, he replied : “poor old Nas, I actually quite like him” Another shout out for Sid Waddell. Hugh Johns was my favourite footie commentator, he could make a nil-nil draw sound like a barnstormer. Going back to the capital radio days, Tony gale was pretty good, think he was at palace one night and him and jonathon pierce were giggling like two schoolboys, the opposition had a player called Bernt Haas, Tony gale kept saying “he must of been out for a curry last night’ [Post edited 4 Jul 0:29]

Yeah, I was more gutted when Brazil got knocked out of that tournament than when England did, I’d never seen football played like that before, my two favourite ‘team’ goals of all time are Carlos Alberto in the 1970 final, and Socrates goal against Italy in 1982, zico turning Gentile inside out, the flick ,and Socrates gliding across the ground like a speed skater, after the goal you can see an Italian player looking at his bench and shrugging his shoulders as if to say ‘what can we do’? |

Drove past the ground tonight on my way home and wondered what was going on in ellerslie, scaffolding up all along the rear of the stand |

I’d prefer Virgil, or even Lady Penelope. |

We need a few Shaun Derry and Clint hill type players instead of this Charles Hawtrey tribute act. |

Head’s up, the new cameras are apparently live now on Hammersmith road near the broadway and on the a4 outside the natural history museum, be careful approaching them as well as passing them |

Used to be a time when you had to prove yourself over many seasons before people decided you were a special talent. Phil foden was meant to be the next best thing. I once saw a kid score a hat-trick in his debut in the top flight, took him a few years before he even got a sniff of an England cap, even then he ended up with hardly any caps despite scoring nearly 200 career goals at a goal every other game ratio.
