A bit surprised when these best teams come up there is never a mention of Djibril Cisse who in terms of overall careers is probably the most distinguished forward ever to play for QPR. Ok I know all about the negatives. I suppose I am here talking about class.
Cisse 452 club games 205 goals
41 games for France 9 goals
undoubtedly there would have been more for Liverpool and a third World Cup without the two broken legs.
Remy 335 club games 113 goals
30 games for France 7 goals
Sir Les 443 club games 184 goals
17 games for England 5 goals

At all the group games. Plus the QF against The Animals. Watched the rest on TV.
My dad and I reckoned we were unlikely to get beyond the QFs when the tickets got a bit pricey.
People nowdays probably don’t realise that we were not really fancied at all.

Work expands to fill the time available.
Back in the late 1960s on a planning course at Central London Poly we spent a term working on projects which envisaged the huge increase in recreation facilities that would be needed as a result of a much shorter working week which would inevitably result from automation. The average working week barely shortened.
Over the years similar scenarios were built up around computerisation, robots and now it's AI.
A major public inquiry then took a month, the report a couple hundred pages and the recommendations were implemented soon after. Now such an inquiry takes several years and millions of pages, dozens of lawyers and hundreds of witnesses.
Then there's the dozens of services now available that weren't even dreamed of back then. AI will no doubt lead to many more. |

Bristol City available at 1000/1 and the Opta computer says promotion for them's impossible. It gives us 12 chances in 10,000.
Only three games ago a poll on here had more than 70% believing we would get 3 points or less in the 9 games remaining. |

As our injury rate has been the subject of much criticism this season without anyone apparently knowing how we compare with other clubs I asked AI "What percentage of first team squad players in the EFL Championship are unavailable injured for more than one week at any one time"
This answer came back -
Approximately 12% of a typical first-team squad is unavailable due to injury at any given time during the season in professional football (including data relevant to the EFL Championship). This figure comes from the long-running UEFA Elite Club Injury Study (covering elite professional men's teams over many seasons). It represents the average percentage of squad players absent from training or match selection due to injury across the competitive season for a typical squad of 25 players. A team can expect ~50 time-loss injuries per season (2 per player), with roughly half being minor (absence <1 week), 37% moderate (1–4 weeks), and 16% severe (>4 weeks). The 12% unavailability already accounts for this mix—the shorter minor injuries contribute less to the snapshot prevalence because they resolve quickly.
Specific aggregate data for the EFL Championship (exactly matching “unavailable injured for more than one week”) is not publicly reported in the same standardized way as the UEFA study. However an 11-year study of English professional football (EFL 2nd/3rd tiers, i.e. Championship and League One) found higher injury rates than in elite European clubs: ~82 injuries per team per season, mean absence ~18.4 days per injury, with ~51% of injuries causing ≤7 days absence and ~49% causing >1 week (moderate + major severity). This suggests the average unavailability in the Championship is likely similar to or slightly higher than the 12% UEFA benchmark (potentially 15–20% total when adjusting for more injuries and longer average absences), with the large majority of that figure coming from injuries lasting >1 week.

So if the first team squad have 41 or more injuries of longer than 1 week we are above average according to this Leeds Beckett long term study.

Yes sure player mentality is a factor, both individual and team, but I thought we were debating whether there is something uniquely soft about our team and their results so as to justify the tag Charity Park Rangers. To me they are just an average Championship team doing much the same as all the other average Championship teams. Clearly from the facts I stated above we have quite consistent favourable results against what are now the bottom half teams, whatever position they temporarily were in when we played them. |

Typical fan delusion.
They are just professional sportsmen doing a job of work. Form, niggles, confidence come and go. Why would they have a different mentality from all the other players in the division? Most of them came from other clubs. Why would they develop a mental problem when they get here. Is it you? |

From what he said I would expect Nourry etc to take a long cool look at the injury log at the end of the season. When he'll conclude that they have taken a few too many risks in buying players with injury histories and they need to tweek the strategy.
Not because of the difficulties caused to the coach and results so much as the buy low/sell higher strategy won't work if there are too many injuries.
Of course he'd be daft to discuss such things with fans on podcasts. |

It's a mistake to take league position early in the season and recent 'form' too seriously as an indication of actually how good a team are. Looking back you can see there were a lot of false assumptions. |

Actually I was surprised when I looked at the record. We have only lost 3 games to clubs now below us and won 5 games against teams now above us.
We beat teams currently 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 x2, 24. Much less random than I imagined. |

I watch or listen to very few podcasts. I find them mostly verbose and tedious. But I sat through both parts of this to try and learn something.
Only two comments really.
One is that I think we have an calm intelligent person helping to lead the club. Which is blessing. The only other one I can remember since the year dot is Warburton.
Secondly I believe he really does seem interested in making decisions in the club's medium/longer term interests rather than the short termism that has plagued us in the past. Which is why he has the job. |

It makes more sense to put our sudden perfect finishing and at least some of the six goals down to randomness. xG would rate some of those goals as no better than a 1 in 20 chance. Luck plays a big part in results and sometimes it’s with you.
But winning improves confidence and confidence can mean they try things that normally they wouldn’t. |

Football is a sport where the result can bare little relation to the performance. If you work back from the result to form an opinion you will often get it horribly wrong as I saw a comment about Middlesbrough v Charlton on another thread. Middlesbrough pulverised them and lost.
I’ve only seen the highlights but Portsmouth seemed to have as many reasonable chances as we did. We just had a dream day of finishing, which was great. Very unlikely to be repeated but immensely enjoyable, not least because of those that scored. |
