Still think it's a bit harsh on Armstrong there, the pass from Willock was a horror, slow bouncing giving the defender time to make an intervention leading to the heavy touch, the header so clear cut that Sky did not bother to include it in the highlights... (I thought it was a bit high myself) The one on one from an angle, good goalkeeping from the keeper could have done better really. We were only really in that game because Armstrong give their defence a torrid time. Andy Cole used to need 4 or 5 chances a game to score 1 - Thought he was worthy of at least a 7 and if he had taken one of those probably a 9 |

Definitely flat back 4 1st half 4-2-2-2 and that was very much causing ourselves problems as so many players having to think where they were, where there team mates would be and not in the position they would normally be and whilst Willock was predominately on the left he was pushed as high as chair who was on the right and for nearly 20 minutes we could not get out of our half We then switched to more of a 4-3-3 with Chair pushed forward and Willock deeper on the left of the 3 and then to 3-5-2 and then ended on the normal 3-4-2-1 |

One minor point of order on the queue times, Millwall was full and it took over 20 minutes into the game and opening the gates to do it the old way. Barnsley and Coventry were far from full yet people still getting in late. The real test if there is any improvement will be the next big game when the ground is full. And the better we are doing we know from the past the more full the ground is going to be. Tweaks to the tech won't change the fact that self scan and self scan with mobile is slower and requires more turnstiles for which we dont have the space especially in Ellerslie to manage peak flow.
If we have to prove covid status it will be chaos far worse than if the stadium was manned |

The cupboard is bare though, Chair is doing well and liked what I saw of him, but Oteh can't get in the Walsall team, Manning has not progressed and performed badly when he has got in the team. The goalkeeping situation is not good, Smithies was worth 10 points a season. We might have to cut our cloth but we still need senior experienced players, not only do we need our team to playing above average to win we will need a manager more able than the rest or we are very much going the way of Ipswich. Do I think we would be any better off this year under Holloway, not for a minute.
Mclaren lost me on Saturday because you cant perform that badly at home to two of the worst teams in the league, I got the impression that there is something else going on behind the scenes, the team, the dressing room did not look together, each out for his own, Leistner and Lynch barely speaking to each other, Luongo not giving a monkeys in recent weeks. Something had to change, but its a total mess and we need a miracle to stay up next season, if we do indeed survive this one. FFP is designed to kill of clubs like ours and now there is no parachute regardless of owners we have to compete with less resources than 90% of the division |

Time to give up on the notion that Jordan Cousins is or ever will be a championship level central midfielder and give Manning a shot in that position until Luongo gets back. I think a little unfair on Scowen given the need to compensate for how appalling Cousins was then being asked to play CM on his own 2nd half as Freeman Wzolok and Eze clearly had no clue how to play a diamond.
Maybe time to rest Eze for a couple of games too and give him time to ponder what he did so well in the first half of the season so he can get back to it, and maybe raise some energy levels too |

From what I hear the decision to twist was taken months before it happened at the end of the season, and it was the consistent inconsistency on and off the pitch that did it for him, so the view was he would be unlikely to improve us further.

Agree with Steve I don't see why Furlong scored above anyone else brung nothing to the party going forward, Scowen for me was probably our best player, and I think Clive has been quite kind to Oteh and Washington to score them the same as Scowen, Luongo and Freeman, who never got the ball back or the runs made that they would of expected from their front men |

Without a doubt it has to be the QPR 5 Newcastle 5 - September 1984, I was just a 10 year old boy standing in the loft with my Dad, I'd been to 20 or 30 games and had never seen us lose, 4-0 down and being destroyed by Waddle, it looked like that record would go that day, yet the most remarkable comeback in one of the most remarkable top flight games. At 5-5 the loft went absolutely mental, a hug a stranger moment, I threw my hat in air and never saw it again. I think I fell properly in love with football that day.
Went on to be lucky enough to be mascot at the boxing day fixture that year 1984 (Guiness Kit) QPR v Chelsea no less. 2-2 all draw. Was supposed to have my pic done with Stainrod and Hucker but Stainrod got himself suspended so had to make do with Gary Bannister. Was really worried about falling over running out of the tunnel on the slippy plastic. Was nicely reassured by Terry Venables and with the ruffle of my hair by Terry Fenwick led the teams out to a huge roar. We were unable to have a kick about though, as Chelsea had forgotten to bring their own balls and there were not enough to go around. The professionalism of the 1980's summed up |

The one thing I liked about Ngbakoto was that he was always looking for the first time pass and had a pretty decent touch and a lot of our good attacking came from these quick first touch passes, unfortunately on numerous occasions the rest of the team failed to move forward or someone took 3 touches and passed it backwards or sidewise |

@myke I don't think Luongo is quite as good as some think, his superior stats for Swindon and Australia, it could be argued, come from getting more time on the ball against weaker opposition. For us and at Championship level he just takes too many touches which os why his turnover rate is so high. He could be a great player but he needs to be coached to move the ball quicker and himself into position quicker |

Was talking to my Spuds season ticket holding uncle at the weekend about young Andros. The spuds fans view is not too dissimilar to our own, exciting when running with the ball, but predictably cuts inside and shoots every time, and they have been quite frustrated with him. (Also said how Niko could be the best footballer on the planet one week and sunday league the next but they missed him)
One thing that was noticeable in the England game is that Hodgson had him on the right and he was instructed to go outside his full back and cross. Something that neither AVB or Redknapp got / gets him to do. |

You make a good point Clive but with the wrong player. Phillips was signed by Blackpool to play in the Premiership we would not have been able to compete. In the same transfer window Warnock had bought Taraabt and Mackie and we added Tommy Smith. So we bought two up and coming players and supplemented with experience. Added to that Warnock bought for a formation his 4-2-3-1. Where would Phillips fit into all this? The previous season we had total disarray with Magilton/Hart/Harford debacle.

We started the season playing 4-4-2 and that was a huge part of the problem, we just dont have the two central midfielders to play this way, in fact I think we have won one game in about 20 playing 4-4-2 across both seasons. Why we dont play 4-2-3-1 again is beyond me, it got us up, it kept us up, it suits Adel best, sadly however it does not suit Remy |

He cost the same amount as Jordan Rhodes a player that had only proved himself at league one level. If you are gonna pay through the nose you do it for a striker. Strikers do not come cheap at any level unless they are totally unproven or on the way down. For all the stuff pointing at Michu he was in the spanish 2nd division and his club was going bust found by a manager who had been living and playing in spain.
I dont mind playing through the nose for a striker or a goalie or a playmaker. West ham are paying Carroll 100K per week and are committed to a 18m transfer. If we go down he has a relegation release clause and will go to the highest bidder. |

Few things I disagree with there Clive. We did not play the same formation as against Fulham, Taarabt was pushed higher and the wingers were deeper, it was vanilla 4-4-2 and that in itself made it looked like West Brom worked harder as they always had an extra man where our front two were isolated and neither of the wide players were far enough forward so both Taarabt and Faurlin kept finding themselves
with the ball and no passing options. Faurlin is not a 4-4-2 central midfielder, he lacks the pace and engine to get up and down. What changed the game was not personnel but the change in formation giving us 5 in midfield and 2 upfront.
I thought Cisse deserves more than a 5 for taking his one chance and some quite decent flicks / link up play despite his usual hip holding and lack of running the channels. SWP made one good run and one good cross and that was it, at times his work rate in the 2nd half was as poor as anyones
I think you have let HR of lightly got his tactics wrong, and we played like an away team |
