When do you think that was exactly? It's got to be at least 12 years since Chambers even played for Saints so if you can remember something I said from that long ago, your level of obsession with me must be off the charts.
I should start making things up that you supposedly said. You'll like that.
Incidentally, I saw Bobby Moore play against us, home and away, just after the World Cup Final, in the 1966-67 season. We scored a total of 8 goals against his West Ham team. He was always terrible against us, as he still was when he played against us for Fulham 10 years later and we scored another 4 goals against them. [Post edited 18 Oct 10:33]

As we saw today, Bazunu is a decent Championship goalkeeper, no more no less. We had our club record 26-match unbeaten run with him in goal, he was Pompey's Player of the Season before he joined us and I wouldn't be surprised if he was Bolton's Player of the Season.
He's not one of the best goalkeepers we've had, but he's not the worst either. That would be Alex McCarthy followed by Dave Maclaren and Tony Godfrey. The reason McCarthy was the worst? He lacked the essential quality that all goalkeepers need, bravery, which meant he was afraid of getting hit by the ball at close range. A hopeless flaw.
I've found that when others, including me, disagree with Nick about football, he usually turns out to be right.

One thing I've learned about Tonda's team selection, is that he has a long-term plan for the whole season, and he knows a lot better than we do how to win as many games as possible. It means that sometimes our less able players get selected for games that we win by a narrower margin than we might otherwise have done.
No Saints manager has a better win record than he does after so many games.

Yes, I was at Burnden Park and also remember how cold it was. I was with a girlfriend I'd met on the Trans-Siberian Express, and even she was shivering. It was never one of my favourite away grounds. In the 70s, there used to be a little group of us on that massive open terrace behind the goal, who'd then have a running battle with the Bolton mob who'd follow us back to the station. Saints' fans got some revenge when Bolton came down here, breaking into the away fans' cage on the Archer's Road end. Remember that cage with a gate?
My first Saints v Bolton game wasn't bad though. It was on New Year's Day, 1966 and we won 5-1, with 2 goals from Chivers and 2 more from Norman Dean. A month later I saw Dean score a hat-trick at Fratton Park, when we beat Pompey 5-2. He had a real purple patch in that promotion season, much like Tony Funnell did in 1978, but he was replaced by the great Ron Davies and never really heard from again. [Post edited 16 Oct 14:29]

He led the campaign against Tonda down here and wanted him sacked. So, if Tonda doesn't treat him with kid gloves, it's understandable.
I believe Tonda got a hell of a lot more abuse online than Blackmore ever did, partly stirred up by BBC Sport's campaign against him. |

Not even that many. We've only played 35 league games against them.
My first games were in the mid-60s and for decades it was unheard of for Pompey to beat Saints. You just considered it a routine victory. It wasn't that big a deal.

No, they only gave pro-Pompey stats, which when you consider how poor their all-time record against us is, are not that easy to find. For the return fixture, they'll only mention how long it's been since we won a league game there, and ignore all the other stats, which are massively in our favour.
The media, including Blackmore, could mention that it will be 22 years without a league win against us when we play them at Fratton, that we have a 6 match unbeaten run against them in all competitions, and that we have won more than twice as many derby games as they have: 21-9. But, they won't.
Pompey may not be very good at football, and their fans boo their team a lot, but they are very good at propaganda.

The last time I listened to one of Blackmore's match commentaries, he spent most of the game moaning about his bad back. It was 'painful' to listen to.
I switched on BBC Radio Solent when I was driving to the 2nd leg of the play-off semi-final with Middlesbrough, expecting some pre-match Saints build-up. Instead I got Blackmore acting as Gibbo's mouthpiece. I switched it off. I suppose his one excuse could be that he's a BBC employee, and their reporting on Saints is generally very negative.
