New Cardiff manager!
at 16:33 16 Nov 2019

Sure, but really more often than not a downward spiral after a season of getting beat doesn't tend to stop just because the quality of opposition drops a level. Bad associations, bad habits and players just stop listening. Perversely if it was Warnock coming in now to replace Harris they'd probably go on a run.

Impressive side isn't it. Though I don't think much of Tom Davies.

Guess they thought they just needed a new voice to motivate and not a change in style/squad. Might not be a disaster, possibly the kind of effective mediocrity to get them into the play-offs, but more likely they'll slowly bleed away money until it's like promotion never happened.

Wall did well to upgrade to Rowett when they did.

FFP charge for Sheff Wed

Explained here. As Norf says the FFP breach and land valuation are red herrings somewhat - the precedents have already been set - it's the "aggravation" around it wrt timing and terms of transaction.

Bielsa taking pragmatic approach to difficult second album - Interview
at 10:42 1 Nov 2019

Probably the most restrained fan of theirs I've seen in a while.

In fairness it's not just the stratospheric stats deluding them, they really do dominate games - without ever making it count. (Not wrong about Ben White either from what I've seen.)

So very ripe for a disciplined 0-1 smash and grab but unfortunately it's the last thing we're capable of. Can't see us getting anything, and if we're the side that finally lets them score early we could ship a good few to boot.

Kelly and BFG
at 08:52 29 Oct 2019

Can't decide on Kelly. He's sort of growing on me but a bit more like mould than out of affection.

Prevented a cricket score though clearly. Gets down lightning quick which I do like a lot. Distribution moot as he never had much on to pass to. Will never be a dominant calming presence but he does have a bit of that particular madness certain good goalies have.

Outside of keeping the fcking thing out of the net he's not going to come up well judged against the classical keeper metrics. Lumley we can compare negatively to Smithies - but we'd probably be better off comparing Kelly to Kenny.

Gee I dunno, you ever think they might be a better side than us steadily progressing on a clear strategy and solid foundations half a decade deep?

I return to the point that you seem to be arguing every time we don't win it's because the other side "simply wanted it more".

Couldn't give a monkeys about Fulham either. Why do we need to force some tryhard beef for the sake of it?

Funny thing about Preston I noticed recently. You can talk to the biggest football fan, professional scribe, au fait with the lowest of lower leagues and the continent, but the one perennial blind spot for 99% of people is simply off the top of your head how many Preston players can you name? 22nd in the national pyramid and if you're really good you get to about six before you have to look it up.

Right yeah because "wanting it more" was the story of game.

I want us to want to win every game - and I didn't see anything to suggest otherwise yesterday - but it will be a sorry day when they mean as much to us as we do to them.

Amos being more of a hypothesis at the moment but still. Hugill and Barbet though we were clearly crying out for. (I don't think anyone will be getting on the latter's back for a good few weeks now).

Plenty of valid points here but I do feel we could tone it down a notch just a little. We've done well to get this far in so short a time from a blank canvas as it is and the kind of players we're talking about requiring don't tend to grow on free transfer trees nice and ripe just when we need them.

Even then if we had Barbet, Hugill, Amos available and fit it could have been miles closer.

I believe for breakfast they had five years further down the path we're 6 months into (and are ahead of schedule for as it is).

Yeah this was enjoyable, and an especially good way to build engagement with the u23 and women's sides. Also great to have the club do this in partnership with a local university and for the outcome to be of such a high standard. (I'm sure at Derby they've set up their own streaming service and paid themselves £10m for the exclusive rights...)

Impressed with Paul Hall, liked the cut of his jib. "No place for shrinking ivies"

Same with the defence really. We could certainly have more balanced all-rounders there but it's somewhat misleading to think there's an individual magic bullet that makes us rock solid overnight.

If I had to pick a single area that could really make an overall improvement in terms of controlling games it's a deep lying midfield passer with a great sense of positioning, a Faurlin - quality players there tend to make a big difference. Sheff Utd last season did all kinds of good progressive stuff but the key to it all was Norwood. We have good willing McTominays but not a Carrick. There's still scope for Amos to become that player for us hopefully (though it's hard not to see Ryan Woods the forgotten man at Stoke and be a little tempted...)
