The Dale Way Podcast - From Her Point Of View 18:51 - Nov 21 with 7663 viewsTheDaleWayx

Hi everybody, hope you are all okay! Our names are Charlotte and Isabelle, we are two female fans that have decided to start a Rochdale podcast but from a females point of view as part of the club showing their support and partnering with the ‘Her Game Too’ campaign. We are new to this and are extremely nervous, but we have just released our first episode today.

We talk about how we became Rochdale fans, reminisce about players and chants, share our experiences as female fans, talk about the season so far, the new management team and board members. We also have Lucy Ford, co-founder of the ‘Her Game Too’ campaign, talking to us about it and sharing her personal experiences.

We would really appreciate your support, if you could spare some time to listen to it. The links are -

This initiative is great. In terms of growing attendances and interest, we sometimes forget that slightly more than half the population of Rochdale is female, and anything which brings positive influences into the club deserves all our support

The casual sexual harassment and misogyny (also seen recently on here in a deleted post) at almost every game doesn’t help.

I remember I started a thread on here a few years ago after an Oldham game where a huge portion of the Dale crowd sang ‘get your tits out for the lads’ at a young Oldham official walking past. A lot of people agreed with me slating that kind of neanderthalic behaviour, but I also got a lot of abuse for it (including PMs). A lot of people seemed to think it was ok because that’s how it’s always been. ‘I hate modern life’ was one that stands out in my memory.

Until people recognise that kind of casual sexual harassment is simply not ok then nothing will change, although I have a huge amount of respect for Charlotte and Isabelle for this.

I remember that thread well

Possibly the worst reactions came from someone who's been subsequently banned - twice - from this messageboard

I'm not a fan of cancel culture, but its got to be said the new approach from the mods has improved things. People are being given a second chance too, as we've seen in the past week or so

But i don't wish to change the focus of this thread away from the new contributors. Respect, indeed

You piqued my interest there, Shun, so I’ve had a dig and found said thread. All I’ll say is this place is far better these days without some of the people who were involved in it.

Apologies for detracting from the OP but I’m nosey.

Yep I just had a mooch and found it too... I only read the first page (of 4) before giving up and closing it down.

The argument that it was acceptable years ago doesn't wash and doesn't make sense... if attitudes and the world have moved forward for the better, then its up to individuals to move with it. Cigarettes were originally sold as having medicinal benefits - we know better now so they are frowned upon - you don't see people saying cigarettes don't do any harm as they didn't in the 40s.

I thought Charlotte came across well on this, as well as on the .com pod earlier in the week, and I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing conversations like hers encourage more people to come alont to Dale games this season. Its just a shame they are getting some abuse on twitter after releasig the first pod today.

A really interesting new angle. Good to hear.

How long will it be before a Dale fan says "I started watching Dale because my Mum took me"?

Poll: Who do you think bury should appoint as their next manager?

Like in a football match, you're going to get booed and slagged off by the opposition. The people who think it's just men, who understand the game.

Some of its banter but sometimes it's to provoke anger in the players/fans. In the past, I have laughed at some of the banter if it's a funny joke in the stands, but it doesn't help and reinforces stereotypes.

Keep up the intensity Charlotte and some old mindsets will change eventually. Like Dale did against Walsall on Saturday for the last 20 minutes.

We need more fans supporting Dale and your initiative helps greatly. Bringing in more females. Maybe those who think football is a guy's sport! (like the missus)

We need more fans supporting Dale and your work helps. You're improving the profile of the club with your message and passion for Dale.

What a brilliant and brave initiative by Charlotte and Isabelle.
This is the way forward in the 2020's.
Back in the past, the 1960's and 70's when a fair number of us on here started watching The Dale, it was so much a different world. Nobody had heard of women playing football, cricket and rugby, let alone such sports being broadcast on TV. There was racism, homophobia and sexism on the terraces, but as I said, it was a different world then.
So much about the game and The Dale has changed. To progress, nostalgia for the past should be kept as memories - it is the future we need to look to - the days when those of us who started supporting the club way back when will never see. It is down to people like you and our younger generation of fans to help take the lead into the 2020's and beyond and keep The Dale thriving in the modern world. For Charlotte's son, her grandkids (all our kids and grandkids!) and great-grandkids, and all our future fans. Well done.
And your analysis of Bottomley and the horrors of his era is absolutely bang on. Chimes with the truth every Dale fan saw, irrespective of gender. What a great listen.

I appeared on a YouTube show tonight speaking about Her Game Too, sexism, racism and how I feel from my personal experiences as well as mentioning how I’ve never been targeted at Rochdale games and fellow fans. So if any of you want to check it out. That’s the link!!

You don't have to wait at all - that's exactly how I started coming to Dale. My Dad used to stay at home doing the tea while my and my Mam would come in (usually fuming) to it on the table.

Thanks for doing this.

Really excellent stuff. Really important that there are more female voices in football. Maybe you could do a joint podcast with our other Podcast as per the other thread.

I remember a mate of mine from a about 45 years ago, Russell, who was taken to the Dale by his Mum, she was a real Dale nut. I also think that Deeplish Blue, might have been taken by his Mum, sorry if I am wrong.

There's plenty of us who get those minor details wrong, i'm always doing it but it really doesn't matter - what does is the commitment to all things Dale
