The whole slaying of the dragon thing. Is that supposed to real or metaphorical? If it’s the former then it’s hardly surprising is it? If it’s not real what’s the difference between that and St. Derek and his talking trousers.

Good to see social distancing being observed there.

It's pillocks like Lloyd that are putting the lives of frontline NHS workers and their families at risk.

No need for a PR opportunity at this time.

No need to break all the rules most are managing to live to.

George Bernard Shaw had it right: "He who can does; he who cannot, teaches." https://www.visittheusa.co.uk/

Yes one of the celebrations of one of the major world religions with billions of followers. Only little countries celebrate shitty patron saint days anyway. Why sweat the small stuff.

St. George's Day was never ever a thing in the first place. We live in the weird arrangement that is the UK/Great Britain/Great Britain and NI where England has dominated and infantalised Scotland, Wales and Ireland for near a thousand years. Oh, and then the Empire. Which was triffic btw.

Given all that, I ask the Q, when asked in KL, Cape Town, Santiago or LA where are you from, what do you say?

If you feel the need to wave any silly flag and think that's worthwhile then go for it. As a patriot in my own way, we English smacked the ball way out of the park in so many ways, and hopefully have learned from it.

It's an old picture. Peter Rush has the Mayoral chains on - he was Mayor in 2013/14.

No need for unnecessary political point scoring at this time.

England created the modern world (17C on) as we know it in many ways good and bad. Essentially trade on a scale never seen before. Nation of shopkeepers said Napoleon, meaning all business and no philosophy underpinning. He was wrong on that.

It's very easy to celebrate a nation's flag day when you're the underdog, never had a chance and all that bollocks. If you are English, there is lots to consider and reflect on, and feel glad about without hoisting the St G flag.

Other than just being old enough to have the benefit of free higher education and, thankfully, only very infrequent use of the NHS, I’ve been lucky enough to never have to rely on state handouts. However, I would never decry them or people who need them.
I do know some people though with very right wing views who are currently taking the benefit of state support during this awful period. Fair enough. What is interesting though is that not one of them did not make an application or refuse any payment in accordance with their often ardent prior views on the subject. It’s as if their views on state support doesn’t apply to them. Oh well, nowt stranger than folk, eh?
I also look across the pond and thank our lucky stars that their politics hasn’t yet prevailed over here.

I agree with what you’re saying with regards to the free market types taking a handout ( I often point to the uk banking system as a successful place where socialism has worked) but to label all of those people as on the right isn’t fair. Not all people on the right are ayn rand thatcherites. Some have a paternalistic flair and believe in some aspects of the welfare state. Just like it’s stupid to say all those on the left support open borders and the EU. Many oppose it for legitimate reasons.

I saw quite a few posts and items about St Georges Day before I heard about it being the start of Ramadan.
Even if I hadn't it would have made no difference to me a I didn't get up ready to look for trouble so I could have a moan about nothing.

You’re right, it was the ardent free marketeers I was referring to. I’d probably describe myself as somewhere in the middle of one nation Tory/social democrat.

I never remember celebrating St Georges day or feel the need to but I respect the Irish, Welsh and Scots right to celebrate their national day. I feel the most patriotic on remembrance Sunday when all Brits come together likewise when Aussies and Kiwi come together on Anzac day to remember the Gallipoli landing on the Dardanelles Straite. By the way Anzac day is this coming Monday 27th April.

This is not the time for bickering.

It wasn’t just Aussies and Kiwis who died at Gallipoli. My Grandad died there when just a young lad.
