I am not sure how Smallbone gets to play ahead of him

Smallbone scored against Leeds - it means he's in for the foreseeable !! :-)

He has played well in a few games.

....but to be fair, he has had a few 'mares this season. He just doesn't seem to track back, or make a tackle and is often at fault in the build-up to many of the goals we concede.

As Well as He should have tracked back and prevent the Equalizer instead of switcjing off and hoping someone else will.

A fvckin joke of a defence - and to think there is another thread on this board, suggesting that our defensive issues are sorted !!

We always gift the opposition chances and goals. Confirmed by our ONE clean sheet all season FFS !!

.....Betting on both teams to score in our games, is usually a given !!

Did we drop back and play sideways when we scored????

Our defensive issues will never be sorted while Ryan Manning is in the team.

An obvious weak link. Any opposing manager will realise this if they do their homework on us.

It's a good job Manning is suspended for the next game.

If you look at the issues on the left, it is more to do with Manning being constantly exposed due to Sulemana failing to track back, in the first half against Middlesbrough when Manning was dropped, they still targeted KWP on our left as they knew he would have no cover and most of their attacks came down that wing.

That is what opposing managers are finding from their homework, that at any given situation, Sulemana is in a too far advanced position to help out our left back.

It will be interesting to see what we do at Preston

You say that but a lot of the goals we’ve recently conceded have been down the centre/KWP’s side, so I don’t exactly think you can blame manning at all for most of them

Playing in a similar role on the other side of the pitch, I don’t see Adam Armstrong helping out the right-back any more than Sulemana helping out the left-back.

Difference being that Walker-Peters is almost always good enough defensively to cope.

I agree with Pat generally, that AA/KWP work better on the right than Sulemana/Manning on the left, and that Manning is the weak link. But also, in this game, Sulemana was much more obviously executing his defensive/ tracking role. I remmeber in particular a great tackle he made right on our by-line in the 1st half. Generally I thought he had a really good all-round game. Manning is what he is. He's often put of position in a way that somebody else tracking back can't make up for. He doesn't know how to close down opponents running the wing--he's often just too far away from them to be effective. He's usually far enough away that he can neither stop them nor intercept their crosses/passes. He's a very obvious weakness in a side that is beginning to look like it knows what it's supposed to do. Other comments above are right...other teams will exploit this. And as lots of people here have been saying for a while, his performance makes the deciison to let Perraud go look very silly.
