Clutching at straws here, but if I remember right in 2005 we lost the first test but at least put down a marker that we could compete and saw it through. I trust Stokes to show that we can be competitive.

Bringing in Head has been the game changer. They're beating us at our own game now.
So disappointed after all the hype.
Just brain dead batting again, the bowlers can't keep going with that intensity, especially if they are barely getting a break in-between innings. Stokes can't work miracles each time we need digging out of a hole.
I fear for this series now, with Cummins to come back and possibly Hazlewood. It feels a bit ominous.

Totally agree. The reluctance of certain players to leave wide, straight deliveries that are in line with "stumps" 7 or 8 is very frustrating. Both Pope and Brook had what appeared as off-stump marks, the deliveries that got them out from Boland were innocuous and should have been left alone.
No blame on the bowlers at all who effectively only rested for 27 overs before they had to come to the crease after such a pathetic batting effort from the recognised batsmen. They have the ability but they aren't prepared to adjust their approach when the game situation warrants.
Having said that, it's still a tough wicket, so hope still remains. Albeit faint. [Post edited 22 Nov 8:38]

The thing is the Bazball aspect of it has worked, we are so much more competitive. I think it has been great to be more positive.
The bit I don't get, and we haven't learned,was from that India chase in the summer. Ridiculous chase, no chance normally, we would prod around, go nowhere and never get near it. This time we Bazballed, got ourselves into a really strong winning position....and kept going. Brook threw it away and that was that. That was the time to reign it in. Just like this Test, our position at lunch...surely it was time to be a bit more sensible. BazBall had got us into a brilliant position, but you can't just keep going, that is a nonsense in Test cricket.
Love Baz and Stokes but it perplexes me that they can't see that. [Post edited 22 Nov 8:25]

Saddened but not particularly surprised to wake up and see it all done and dusted. Absolutely braindead stuff from England sadly.
I completely get that Bazball is about freeing players to be positive, and overall I still think it’s a good thing, but there are situations where it surely needs tempering a bit, in favour of some balance and restraint. However talented our batters are, it feels like the mentality to dig in and slowly grind out a total when required isn’t there. We just constantly default to slogging, which either goes brilliantly or falls apart.
