Robin Smith RIP 11:08 - Dec 2 with 768 viewsprofessor_peach

I know that quite a few people on here enjoy their cricket, so very sad news that the death of Robin Smith one of Hampshire's finest has been announced.

Such sad news

Not had the best of times since he stopped playing

His batting was brilliant, enjoyed watching so many of his innings in his hayday

He was brilliant for Hampshire, especially in the short form, remember him pretty much single handily taking us to the Natwest Trophy.

Sadly he never really turned on that form the same for england, and like you say he had some serious demons after he retried.

63 is no age too, really sad news

He had a test average of 43
and a one day average of 39
So to say he never done it for England is a poor comment.

Was more a comment on success with England rather than ability, that side weren't massively successful sadly.

With Hampshire however he was much more successful

I wonder how many other former sportsmen are going to die at such a young age this year?

Its weird how they never advise cause of death now. They just imply something.

"Demons" don't ill you

Demon's in his case was a long history of alcohol abuse so yeah, that generally does catch up eventually

Really tragic news. Growing up he was my idol along with Gordon Greenidge, Trevor Jesty and Chris Smith.

I'll never forget one day at Northlands Road. Myslef and a couple of mates were allowed to operate the small scoreboard by the members pavilion. I think it was a Sunday League match, but SMithy was at bat and hit the most ferocious square cut I have ever seen in my life. The ball was still rising as it hit the top of the scoreboard.

I can't recall if it was him or Trevor Jesty but there was Minor COUnties match and one of them hooked the ball and it went straight through the window of one of the flats next to the ground. Cue the owner (a woman) stomping across the outfield as mad as hell.

Simpler, and more enjoyable, times.

RIP Robin SMith

No, sadly thats just subjective speculation. Not a cause of death.

He talked about his battle with drink and had written about it in his book. Why are so interested in the cause of death ? It’s just sad that a talented bloke who had his demons has passed at a relatively young age.
