Goalkeepers are all about confidence. They need to feel that the manager and defenders have confidence in them and that as a result they can be trust themselves to perform their roles well.
Damage that confidence and it's a downward spiral to loss of form.
It's true that if your centre forward makes an error it's probably not going to lead to a goal against. If the keeper makes and error ....
There are signs that McCarthy is struggling a little. His kicking has always been erratic and now it seems Salisu is posted in the 6 yard box to help at goal kicks. You can also see that his starting position when the opposition is attacking is perhaps a couple of metres further toward the goal line than it was last season. That opens more angles for shooting.
The question is whether it's better to remove him for a few games and work on some of the issues or stay "loyal" and hope that these are temporary.
It's a fine balance but for me, I'd give Forster the nod and tell him that he is first choice until the New Year.

Both Forster and McCarthy have had great games against Chelsea recently, and in my view are certainly both in contention to start, as I definitely think McCarthy is better, but after Forsters display against Chelsea I wouldn’t be bothered whatsoever if he were to start, but I’d rather have McCarthy. Still if he is poor against Watford then yeah start Forster for Villa, but I’m reality what has McCarthy done which is that bad this season? As the second Burnley goal he was just caught off of his line, and if he’d saved it everyone would’ve gone on about how great it was, so it’s not the greatest goal to concede but isn’t a complete blunder, in which he’s not had at all this season. But still like I said before I’m not bothered of who starts

Which ever keeper we choose - their distribution will be utter shÃte.
In all fairness to McCarthy his distribution is certainly better than Forster, as Fraser sure did pull off a few decent saves at Chelsea, he also hit it out for a throw quite often, whilst McCarthy would at least keep it in play

3 people gone for McCarthy
I am one of them. Whilst I think Fraser has done enough to be given a chance in a league game I also don’t think that McCarthy has done enough to get dropped yet. They both have strengths and weaknesses and put together would probably make a quality keeper.

Not sure what you’ve seen to believe this? McCarthy had the worst distribution I have ever seen from a goalkeeper, terrible
They are both rather poor in reality, but that's all we have and as someone posted earlier if you could merge their better attributes then we'd have a competent keeper..sadly that isn't yet possible 😉
In the end there is no need to discuss this, as for sure McCarthy will start. Forster was here now for years earning big and doing next to nothing for it besides suffering from depression. You won't keep someone (expensive) like him as a backup keeper for the new number one that will come in when finally Forsters wages are off the books, that's why McCarthy will stay. And if you've got two equally weak keepers, you will rather give the one games, who will stay with you beyond this season and to whom you will have to pay lower bonusses...

Are you saying that anyone suffering from a mental illness should be sacked from their jobs? Seems harsh.

Where on earth has he said that?
Why are you trying to make it seem like he has?
I was asking a question. It sounds like the poster has a problem with someone earning a wage whilst being ill. It is not like he has done absolutely nothing since he signed for us it it? Or is that another question I am not allowed to ask?

No, I'm not! And he wasn't sacked. He did continue to earn millions and didn't even move to another club where he could have played because he didn't want to take a paycut. With every player the club has to consider wether a new contract will be worth the investment. As Forster already did cost a fortune and wasn't worth it, they opted for the by far cheaper option in McCarthy. In the end there is no difference if that happens because of a lack of abilty, a knee injury or mental issues.

ARE YOU KIDDING???
McCarthys distribution is awful. He kicks it to the opposition every time, or out of play, he takes an age to release it He is a very poor keeper and for soemreason Ralph sees him as better than FF?? Oh and along with you oddly

So I dreamt that he went to Celtic on loan then? The club offered him a contract which he signed and as far as I can see has honoured. If he doesn’t get selected to play for the first team is that down to him or the manager? I can’t see that he has done anything wrong frankly. You can argue about his wages all day long but who in their right mind would turn down that kind of money if offered?

Yes, I posed a question to which he responded. But thanks for joining in 😉 Do you have a problem with an employee being paid by the employer when incapacitated? There, if have asked you a question now so you can legitimately join our conversation without looking like a gate crasher.
