The ongoing worry of the goalkeepers 11:55 - Jul 24 with 1211 viewsfelly1

I want Gavin Bazunu to succeed at Saints and seeing as we look highly likely to be starting the season with him as our first choice I'll be backing him to come good.

Last season he was pretty poor in my opinion and I actually felt sorry for him as in hindsight it was a ridiculous decision to bring a 20 year kid who had only proved he could perform at League 1 level and expect him to be the first choice keeper at a struggling Prem club.
So far pre-season against pretty weak opposition he's made a few top saves but just as many poor errors that cost us goals.
Next season if we really want to get promoted I'd love the club to bin off Mccarthy and bring in a proper experienced keep to challenge Bazunu.
If we don't do this and the mistakes continue we won't be getting promoted for sure... Its such an an important position in the team and it needs addressing.

It is pointless making great saves one minute if you are going to make howlers the next minute.

It’s probably the most crucial position on the pitch.

Neither of these keepers are up to it, and we have to get a new keeper pronto if we have any chance of getting near to promotion.

He's not tall enough or a presence, same as McCarthy. Forster, Niemi, Schmeichel, all big, tall commanding goalkeepers. Bazunu just isn't a confident, commanding presence. He makes too many errors.

Poll: After Nick's revelation, would you welcome back Danny Ings?

Have you checked the average height for a goalkeeper ?

Bazunu is 6ft 2.

Of the ones you mention McCarthy is 6ft 4, Anti Niemi was 6ft 1 and Kaspar Schmeichel was also 6ft 2 same as Bazunu although his dad Peter was 6ft 4.

6ft 2 to 6ft 4 is about average, although the of top ones Jordan Pickford 6ft 1, Alisson 6ft3, De Gea 6ft 2, Ederson 6ft 2, Dean Henderson 6ft 2, Lloris 6ft 2,

Bazunu has made a couple of errors in pre season, but this is the time to make the errors and get the confidence back.

Alex McCarthy isnt the man for Nigel Martin, he is not good enough with his feet, if you watched the game at Reading, Bazunu carried the ball forward.

Bazunu not being a commanding presence last season was down to several reasons, age is one but the main one was having a defence that was consistent in front of him, every game Saints had different central defenders and that is not good.

When Niemi played he was a small goalkeeper compared to the forwards in front of him, most sides had a target man, few do today, the best sides pass and keep tha ball and wait for opening and not just hit it into the box except in desperation late on.

Niemi rarely left his six yard box, but he had defenders who knew that and knew they had to deal with the ball, both keeper and defender knew whose ball it was to deal with the moment that it was kicked.

This wasnt the case last season and Bazunu didn't know whether to stay or go and that bred hesitancy in both defence and keeper.

You could say the same happened to Fraser Forster after Van Dijk & Fonte left, he went from having defenders who knew what they were doing and with all of them knowing whose job it was , to suddenly having Stephens & Yoshida who couldnt mark player or head a ball and suddenly Forster was hesitant and his confidence shot

I'm sure you mean Russell Martin, not Nigel Martin, but the point you make about the keeper needing to be good with his feet in the new system is spot on. It's the difference between breaking past the press and giving away easy goals.

As for the chances of binning McCarthy as mentioned above - unfortunately not a hope in hell. He is paid too much. No one would offer him good wages so he will just stay here.

The problem with comparing our CBs who replaced Fonte and VVD is the bar is so high we will never replicate that level of quality, leadership and experience.
Your expectation of the CBs is very difficult for a club of our stature to achieve.
Obviously we would all love high quality players who also have the leadership and experience required but we simply can't afford these kind of players unless we get real lucky with our recruitment.
Can you name me one CB you have been happy with since those two left?
As for the goalkeeping situation I just hope the lower standard is more a comfortable level for Bazunu but it's telling that last season the three relegated teams had weak or very young keepers, whilst the likes of Forest and Bournemouth identified average but experienced keepers to bring in and improve their defensive situation.

I’m not sure I see the link between making errors and getting your confidence back………

Bazunu let in absolute horrors in Turkey and at Reading (second goal).

I don’t really see how this helps either his own confidence, or his defence’s confidence in him.

When Bazunu let in the goal at Goztepe the defence was Livramento, Lyanco, Stephens & Walker Peters, so I would suggest that their confidence in him is not key as at least 3 of them wont be here for the coming season.

Pre season friendlies are where you get the mistakes out of the way, it is about what you do next not what has just happened

Pre season is about sorting your best 11 and tactics and solid foundation for the season
With two error prone keepers we are going to struggle
How many seasons now has our keeper situation been an issue
It’s stupid to blindly head into this season with the same personnel, it will
Mean the same errors and the same results

That was an absolute howler and one that McCarthy would be proud of !!

The thing is, both of our Keepers regularly make costly errors, so is it any wonder the defenders don't have any confidence in them.

We all know deep down that the errors shown in pre-season are just a taste of what we are to expect during the actual season. Both Keepers will make plenty of mistakes, but the real questions will be whether the mistakes will be punished or not and how many points they will cost us.
