The one current vote against must be Dwight!

I voted no yesterday as did not think restricting to 1 appeal each , per half was a good idea. In fact an awful idea.

The other system works well in rugby, which is a much more comparable sport..

In Rugby, can the team captain ask the referee to consult the TMO?

But by putting the onus on the team to request a review does away with one of the main objections to video refs that there would be too many interruptions.

Works well in tennis.

Problem is "honest teams" like Swans would ask once a game perhaps, where as teams like Chelse and Man U would spend half the game insisting the ref refer to the technology

Possibly, but the refs are intelligent enough to go to TMO when there is any doubt over the decision. Also generally rugby players have respect for the refs and their decisions.

The whole thing about it slowing the game down is hugely overstated in my opinion. In rugby, the only reason that the TMO can take some time is when the ref is looking at try decisions, where the ball is being covered by 8 players and the ref needs to see a couple of different angles. In football, the decisions are pretty simple. Take the Rashford decision...ref blows whistle, asks TMO...10-15 secs later he is told that there was no contact with the player...play on (or freekick for diving).

As long as it is done correctly and the refs are trained properly and consistently, there should be no problems. You wouldn't see refs using TMO for every offside or every foul. There are just huge moments such as Sunday where it could make a big difference, for the sake of 10-15 seconds.

If it were used lik this it would work.
My fear is like much else in professional football it would be abused.

2 or 3 per half. Wouldn't slow the game down much. Would even add to the excitement as the crowd wait for the answer, especially if the question is show on the board.

BTW The only reason rugby players don't hassle the ref as much is because the game is such a mess no-one knows WTF is going on anyway.
Nothing to do with rugby players and fans being some superior, more honest breed as a lot of eggies want to believe. (It's probably unique amongst sports in having to legalise something because they couldn't stop the cheating).

That's the thing - our officials need to be harder on players, booking or sending off players who are abusive to them, as well as stamping their authority on the game.
Rugby type sin bin for dissent would help.

Why can the 4th official (or the 5th, 6th) be linked to the ref as the assistants are now. Clearly there was an issue today. Either a pen, or a booking for diving. The ref blows his whistle, the other officials watch it back and then give the outcome.

It wouldn't in most cases involve any break in play. If the fifth official is upstairs watching the live Sky feeds, he'd see instantly what those of us watching on TV, etc see. He can then notify the ref as to what happened and the the ref can react accordingly.
The PL and the major cups are too valuable to be left to chance.

1 appeal per half per team.

I think that bringing in extra rules just needlessly over complicates things.

Just allow the ref to speak to his video ref when he sees fit. If they are trained properly for it, we'll only see it during penalty calls that look marginal and incidents like that.

I agree it could lead to discussions then about why the ref didn't use the TMO, but this is where the respect and trust for the refs comes in.

Problem is, if you leave it up to the ref on the field, and he totally misses something, he can't question it.
Where as if a fifth official in the stand says "That player dived, that player handled the ball, it was inside / outside the area, he was offside" or even "a player 30 yards back elbowed another when you were up the field" and he has seen it on the video, he can guide the ref towards the correct decision.
With each game worth millions potentially, it's wrong to continue to guess or miss decisions.

Isn't that what the assistant refs/linesmen are for? They're all connected via mic...that should cover all bases.

Also, video refs should be used only to look at the replays when the ref in charge asks him to...not to watch the whole game on the TV.

Of course it does. The appeal is pointless, just let the ref go to the video ref when he sees fit and give the video ref the same power linesmen have to notify the ref if they think he has missed something.

I don't see FIFA or UEFA (or the PL for that matter) being particularly keen, as their cash cows will be against it. Maybe something like a match changing decision in a high profile CL or WC game would force their hand.

Ahoulda / woulda/ etc
Sunday was like three blind mice.
Referee was unsighted, linesman near our fans was unsighted and obviously the other linesman was too far away.
The linesman nearest us took a guess and guided the ref yo the wrong decision.
