Springwatch. on 20:04 - Jun 6 with 1401 views | dickythorpe | I agree, after a days work surrounded by some very odd people, it is nice to see some creatures that have more sense and dignity than the race that dominate this planet! Why are some female blackbirds brown and not just black Lifey?

Maybe the male is younger? Our female of the pair that live in our garden is now considerably smaller than her predecessor who died a month or so ago. It was fascinating by the way, that our male had a new mate by the next day. Our old female was the same size as our male.

She was fine until a couple of hours earlier, and then she just went a bit odd to be honest. Sat by the feeder we put out for them, and wouldn't move. We had to stop the dog going into the garden as she would have gone for her and the bird just wouldn't shift. I tried to put some raisins and mealworms right next to her to see if she would take them, but she just sat there. Didn't seem anything wrong with her wings or anything. We went out for a bit, and when we came back she was dead. Gave her a burial in a little spot with the rest of the birds we've had since we've been here. I realise that sounds pathetic, but she gave us great joy to watch her and her family every day.

Oh that is odd! Not pathetic at all Lisa, they give me a lot of enjoyment and I would do the same. Once I cut the lawn I hear them immeadiately chirping away. Then even before I've put the mower away they are down. The next morning after a cut is best, the amount of worms they collect is amazing! Plus early morning/evening rain seem the best pickings for worms.

The female Blackbird is Brown and the male is black with red beak, and usually about the same size. What makes you think they're both female?
