Did anyone listen to the Radio Wales phone in last night?
The main subject (after the Swans performance and Welsh rugby moans) was the lack of support Cardiff have regarding their league position.
A lot of excuses came out. Rob Phillips gave valleys austerity and the fact that there's also a rugby team and ice hockey in the City, a lady phoned in quoting the unemployment (?) problem in Cardiff but the only honest response came from a long time Cardiff fan who said it like it is. He said that the people within Cardiff had no civic pride and out of a population of around 340,000 people only 8,000 could call themselves true Cardiff fans.
He went on to say that some of his mates used the sale of John To shack in the 70's as a reason never to go again and spoke of people he knew only wanting to see if they went up this season before getting PL ST's for next season, and then only to see the big boys come to town.
A bridged bassey (who moved to Swansea and is a good friend of mine) has always been amazed by the high level of support there is for the Swans within Swansea itself. |
Cardiff is growing, with another 100,000 people planned for the next decade. 450k plus population.
It’s changed and grown so much that many of the new comers do not really follow local teams, probably only 2% actually follow football.
I wouldn’t call it civic pride as I know loads of people who weren’t born here who live here, they don’t have to stay, indeed many could easily go back to wherever. They want to stay as they love the place though, decent size, lots going on, not as expensive as London or Bristol and lots of good jobs, easy to get in and out of etc...
Our fan base has grown a great deal in 15 years like yours, we’ve been through a load of grief too whereas you lot have had nothing but success in that time. Swansea is no where near as cosmopolitan as Cardiff, people tend to stay put and not so many foreigners come in, hence a lot of support in the actual city. Same as Wrexham, Burnley, Newport etc...
Wander in to the city when a game is on and it’s very busy, most wont even know we are playing.
Personally, I don’t think the large association with trouble in the past or the fact a lot of fans come from the valleys has helped. A more modern approach an attempt to get those that live on our doorstep in would help, not putting in free buses from the valleys. No adverts in the city, no free buses, no ticket outlet in the centre. Commercial dept is a joke and has been for years. |  |

Since then you haven't filled level 1 let alone take up the other two tiers available so travel regular you definitely don't.. By the way, your place is the worst situated ground in the top two flights of the league. It's on the edge of your town with a single service bus not even a dedicated football service. I've been on it twice and not had a seat and there's ONE bus kept in the away car park thing to ferry away support back to the center after the match which makes a single journey. There's virtually nil carparking outside or near the ground. I drove last time and parked a very long way up a hill opposite which took 15 or more minutes to walk back to. All that aside yours is the only place I've heard canned fan chants over the PA. Tragic. | | | |
