Sporting Lisbon imploding. 10:56 - Jun 28 with 1326 viewsomarjack

Their fans attack the players for missing out on champions league football, Their top players terminated their contracts because of what happened, costing the club more than 100 m worth of talent. Their owner De Carvalho was voted out of his own club..Their new manager Mihajlovic sacked 9 days after his appointment.

This really puts the word shambles in a different perspective.

They could always sign Renato Sanches.

How can players terminate their contracts?
Source?
They would either have to buy out their contracts (unlikely) or not be able to play football for any club anywhere until their contracts ran down.

Edit : OK just checked it out. Players are claiming "just cause" cos they were attacked by fans on the training ground. They'll have to plead their case in court to justify it.

Being attacked and working in an unsafe environment are good causes for contract termination

Yep.
But all they have to do in pre-season is not Mae an effort and the club will have little choice but to make massive changes in security or move them on.
In fact the club are hoping to talk them round but are holding a strong breach of contract case against some of them.

Breach of contract? Not really. Failure to ensure a safe working environment is the key element, as a result independent contractors are entitled to withhold their services.

In the shadow of their neighbours on most levels. Starting to sound familiar.

Simply put
If an appropriate risk assessment is in place and agreed (in this case with players' reps) and recommendations implemented then the employer is covered against negligence.
If the risk assessment and its recommendations were inadequate (i.e. what a trained person would consider appropriate to the situation) the employee has a right to sue the employer usually through a tribunal.
Incidents that occur outside the agreed assessment should be addressed as soon as possible. Risk assessment does not require the employer to prepare of any incident only those that can be foreseen within the context of the employment.
Employees can withhold their labour until situations have been addressed but can not break the contract where one exists.
In most cases where life, limb or continued employment are not in doubt a compromise is reached with the employer being reasonably generous to avoid massive costs.
Sometimes employees are looking for a payout which again, employers often, agree to then get a tribunal to set the amount (usually less than the plaintiffs expects) in order to move what they see as trouble makers on to someone else.
Done plenty of these :-)
