He was one of the first at The Comedy Store, and was already established when Jack Dee was trying to break through in the 80's. He made me laugh a lot when I saw him on telly, but as he was mainly a Radio 4 comic later on he was certainly not mainstream. I don't remember his early stuff being overtly political; just poignant and funny. RIP.
