To answer the original question, as most have said get specialist ski clothing, doesn’t have to be expensive at all. TK Max, Aldi etc all have kit that’s cheap and does the job. I’d invest in thermals or baselayers as well, won’t cost a lot.

If you get hooked on it, then look at the more expensive gear. Snow and Rock in McArthur Glen have good bargains, especially at the end of the season. Coyoti have some great stuff, but it’s a bit pricey for me in there. Worth going for a look and trying to source the stuff they are selling online.

I went snowboarding a few years ago and hired salopettes from a place in Barry, sorry but can’t remember the name of the place.

Barry ski lodge?

It's closed down.

There is a ski shop in cowbridge, not cheap though.

When my son went skiing we hired from Mike Davies in Upper Killay.

It was a while ago so I can't say how he compares pricewise.

He doesn’t.

His shop is in the process of being converted to houses. Shame.

Give it a try. It’s far more exhilarating than skiing. It’s normally the skiers who haven’t tried it that slag it off.

Hurts more mind and you have to go through that horrible ‘beginner’ week all over again.

I find you need decent conditions to snowboard though, skiing is more versatile.

I’ve done both regularly and disagree, you can reach much higher speeds on skis and still remain in control. The problem isn’t with snowboarding itself, it’s just that the majority of the people who do it are bloody useless and just sit there on their arses causing obstructions to everyone else.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

First point I disagree. Yes you can go faster, but that doesn’t necessarily make it more exhilarating. You can easily get a decent speed on a snowboard and skiing on powder doesn’t come close to the floating feeling you get on a board.

Second point, agree completely. Can’t argue with that at all.

You don't have to spend a great deal on the latest trendiest gear. Though we've all probably done it.

if you've got a decent waterproof jacket that's warm at home that's fine put a few thin layers underneath, sometimes overheating is more of a problem than being cold.

Salopettes and waterproof gloves are a must.

Buy the best that you can afford, quality of kit really does make a difference.

Skiing or boarding is a very energetic sport and there's nothing worse than bulky clothing that offers little breathability or manoeuvrability.
A good ski jacket will last a lifetime and can be used for everyday wear also, salopettes should be waterproof ( obviously) and comfortable to wear.
I've been lucky enough to ski all over the world and my advice is don't spoil a fantastic holiday by compromising on kit, you will regret it.

All bang on. What I would say though is not everyone takes to it. If you’re a beginner, you spend the vast majority of your week on the little bowl of green and blue runs near the bottom of the mountain. You don’t need grade A kit for that.

If you go once and you love it, then CopaMundials post is perfect advice for your second trip onwards.

If it's your first time skiing then here's a friendly piece of advice.

If you live close to a dry ski slope then make several visits to it before going on holiday, it will teach you the basics and give you a massive head start when you arrive at your resort. There is nothing worse than spending large sums of money on a skiing holiday only to find yourself spending the first few days on the beginners slopes learning the snow plough and stem turns, all this can be avoided if you have access to a dry slope.

Be realistic on what you are going to achieve on your first holiday, master the basics and if by the end of the week you are able to comfortably navigate blue and green runs you will have done well.

Do not make the classic mistake of looking at a piste map and aim to ski red and black runs by the end of the week, any fool can jump on a chair lift and go to the top of the mountain, navigating your way down it can be terrifying and dangerous and can cause you serious injury.

A skiing holiday is a fantastic all round experience don't spoil it be letting your ego write cheques that your body can't cash ( Top Gun I believe )

Oh and finally, if your budget can stretch to it seriously consider one to one lessons, group lessons are more affordable and can be fun but the group will usually be tailored to the poorest skier in it not the best.

Have a great time.
