| The Living Planet report 09:03 - Sep 10 with 7407 views | Catullus | As if we didn't know but human expansion is killing us. Wildlife is being lost at the greatest rate ever. A football sized pitch of the Amazon rain forest is being cleared for beef cattle grazing land EVERY MINUTE. They are even saying that our expansion into other creatures habitats , the illegal wildlife trade and the removal of wildlife could be responsible for the Covid pandemic and that if we continue this kind of thing will be more commonplace. We are destroying, or maybe have destroyed the balance of our planet and it is the whole of humankind who will suffer as a result of our own greed and stupidity. | |

No they aren't but thanks for Wiki link. I'd go for the Met office definition:- https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/w This is still summer - if it runs in to October / November and follows a frost then it will be an Indian summer. I know I'm being pedantic. [Post edited 17 Sep 2020 15:38]

| The Living Planet report on 14:57 - Sep 17 by Catullus | You are being deliberatly obtuse now. Or did you choose to ignore that I said we could have half the number of nuclear plants? That's a 50% decrease, but you knew that. The plants are constantly turned up and down now, down during the night and back up for peak. If you want gas, do you support fracking? A couple of warm days you say, so is it an indian summer or not. 1976 is another diversion. The average temperature is the issue. But then you never answered the point about the link you posted to Kansas showing the temperature was a record cold spell but a record high for a "low" temperature during the coldest period. We absolutely can and should be making and fitting our own infrastructure. that we don't is an awful sell out of UK jobs. |
If you read the link to the 1959 indian summer you would have seen that it said " There were some early hints of what was to come, with a spell of exceptional warmth and sunshine in late-February - as high as 19°C in London - and again in mid-April, and the weather became predominately warm and sunny from the second week of May right through until the third week of October." How is 1976 a diversion when talking about Global Warming, non of the modern summers were as hot for as long or as severe for droughts as 1976 I quote " If we only needed half the power stations we do now and they were at capacity on much fewer occassions, it's cheaper? " I do not see the word Nuclear anywhere in that statement, perhaps you said it somewhere else and I missed it? Your statement "The plants are constantly turned up and down now, down during the night and back up for peak. " are you still talking Nuclear or gas & coal? If it is gas and coal there is a massive difference between almost zero output to max output compared to 50% to maximum output, including the fact that it is a graual ramping between day and night. If you were talking Nuclear. they do not ramp at all in the UK. Yes of course I support fracking, and coal mining. Now to Kansas, I did not want to embarrrase you with the fact that you did not understand what they were saying. Let me lay it out for you. The comment was for September the 9th, and they are talking about the highest temperature for the day as in the afternoon. Quote "It is now official! We destroyed the record for coldest high at Kansas City yesterday (Sep. 9th)." OK so far? He then goes on to say "the (coldest) high of 54 breaks the old record of 66 set in 1907". ie the previous lowest high temperature for the day was set in 1907 at 66 degrees F, on the 9th it only managed to get up to 54F a whole 12 degrees F LOWER. Got it now? [Post edited 17 Sep 2020 16:15]

Yes but you had been banging on about record cold temperatures as a counter to me saying the average temp is rising. Record temperatures continue to be set in all areas. It's why 1976 is another diversion, it means nothing by itself, you have to look at the long term trend and long term the average temperature is rising. Re the power plants, does it matter which power plants? but lets just call it nuclear, the point still stands, if we have half as many why would it be more expensive? Even more so if you are right and they run at the same level all day, half the plants means half the costs. You really support fracking? You can argue all you like that the earth isn't warming up but the data says otherwise, https://www.theweek.co.uk/9304

Whilst this isn't a climate change thread - you are hitting the nail on the head. AFD doesn't understand climate or climate change. He gets confused with weather. He does seem easily confused and even more easily led. He'll probably quote a postman who had to wear an extra jumper in May as being proof that climate change is nonsense soon [Post edited 17 Sep 2020 16:40]

Well if you really want to be pedantic how about what the actual meteoroligists say? "Meteorological summer will always begin on 1 June; ending on 31 August." Quote from the Met Office, so yes they can have their own "facts" and so can you.

And what has that got to do with an indian summer or anything I posted? Ahhh I see, you are agreeing that Summer (as in warm tempratures) have lasted longer than meteorological Summer and in to meterological Autumn, I wonder why that could be????? [Post edited 17 Sep 2020 16:40]

How? We already have a lot of power stations are you suggesting that we replace them all with "modern power stations"? Which I assume you to mean peakers. Because what you showed me was nothing I did not already know.

No, one is a date period devised by the "Met Office" and the other is used by all the other actual meteorologists. Yes, they have, but as I said it is nothing new and none of the recent ones lasted as long as 1959. I wonder why that could be?

Why do you you want to replace very good baseline power stations with expensive, unreliable, intermittent and short lived green energy? That have ben shown by Germany to not save CO2 emissions? Do you want to kill off the UK economy?

There is nothing antiquated about Nuclear and Gas. Yes eco freindly will improve, but it will never not be intermittent. The survey was buried unless you had already seen it and new what to ask for.

But when it comes to "green" energy you are biggest pair of hypocrites on this forum. You do not care about the thousands of birds & bats and millions of insects slaughtered by wind turbines or burnt by big solar farms every year. You don't care about levelling the trees to make way for them. You don't care about the thousands of tons of concrete, steel and fibre glass used to make and install them. Which will all have to be decommissioned when they fail and sent to land fill. You don't care about the pollution producing them or the child labour used to dig the rare earth products out of the ground. You don't care about the miles and miles of extra copper cables get the power to the grid. You don't care that they make electricity too expensive for the poor. It doesn't matter to you cos it's "green" and "eco". Hypocrites the pair of you.

If you were familiar with them then why not mention them in your reply to Catullus. It is because they don't suit your argument. What you said was fundamentally wrong. L No I'm not suggesting we replace them wholesale now, but replace as the old ones come to the end of their operational life.

Because that isn't happening. It may have in the infancy of the technology but not anymore. As I've said I scrutinise EIA's for a living. It is what I do. I manage the team that advise Welsh ministers on the environmental impacts of major development. I wouldn't advise them to get consent if the impacts weren't manageable. Does the M4 link road ring any bells? There is always an impact, we are destroying the planet, we need infrastructure to have as little impact as possible. Having no impact at all isn't possible. You keep believing obviously unqualified people on blogs though. Just like Homewood who posted a laughable picture of a rain gauge that he so obviously didn't understand the photo defeated his own point. As for feeling sorry for child labour, what on earth do you think will happen as the climate changes. Who do you think will suffer most? Don't you think that is hypocritical?

In 50 years IF the climate changes they wouldn't still be poor if their nation was properly industrialised, green energy cannot run industry, which is why the 3rd world rejects it. Industrialisation has brought every single benifit to mankind in the last 200 years. By writing off these kids today for something that may or may not happen in the future says it all about you and your ilk. So you don't believe that wind turbines kill birds, bats and insects. Especially raptors. Not only that you think they have less impact than conventional generation. But enough is enough, we are on totally opposite sides of the equation and will never agree on anything. [Post edited 17 Sep 2020 19:08]

Turbines can harm wildlife. Yes particularly Bats (who basically explode) and birds. They are generally planned in areas where they won't be a major problem or have mitigation in place. For instance Mynydd Brombil (above Port Talbot) was reduced from 4 to 3 turbines to avoid Honey Buzzard populations. It seems to have worked. Bat's generally fly over a very regular flight line, provided a turbine is out of this area it is usually safe for bat's. Don't believe the BS.
