| The Pembrokeshire Murders on 13:49 - Jan 17 by Catullus | It was moral enough for the politicians of the time but not for the people hence the mass protests that saw to it's demise. We often see that politicians morals are not quite the same as the rest of us. They are supposed to be among the great and the good yet far too often they seem to be slithering along with the other bottom feeders. |
He is also spectacularly missing the point which is no surprise. The poll tax wasn’t a new law, it was an extension of the taxation system that has existed for centuries. Why do we pay taxes? The theory is that money goes into a big pot where we can have services that better everyone’s lives. A health service, a police force, a fire brigade, coast guards, better roads, grants for starting up businesses, support for people who are disabled or otherwise can’t work, full time education for every single child up the age of 16 etc. Obviously we can argue about how much tax we pay or who pays the most, or even what the government spends it on, this was the crux of the poll tax opposition. That argument has been raging on for a long long time, but I think we’d all agree that some sort of taxation process is the correct thing to do for the nation as a whole. Nobody objects in principle to paying tax. Because it’s the right thing to do. Those who evade or avoid paying taxes or otherwise abuse public money rightly get castigated and they should be punished heavily. | |
