That is despite having the most at risk with by far the highest percentage of over 80s and 65s. 4.1% in Wales, 5.7% Scotland and 7.8% England. Well done Drakeford and Co. Shame that the other UK leaders couldnt follow the same policies to prevent deaths elsewhere. By the way this includes the period when Wales had the highest rate in the world.

40% of the cases in Wales today are in Swansea or Neath Port Talbot largely due to outbreaks in Mynyddbach and Ysalyfera. Mynyddbach is the highest area in Wales and Ystalyfera 4th. It has also spread to neighbouring wards such as Penderi, Landore and Morriston and Pontardawe and Ystradgynlais from Ystalyfera. The upper Swansea Valley accounts for 60% of NPT cases and Ystradgynlais for most of the cases in Powys. Hopefully this will be rectified soon as the mobile testing units this week in Pontardawe and Ystradgynlais. The figures will probably increase this week before reducing.

Yes but even the weekly figures released to day are only for the week to 24 March. When they release the rate daily it is always 5 days out of date to allow time for the figures to come through. Tests often take days from the date they are taken to the recorded date. The daily figures show lower figures on early days of the week and rise towards the weekend as the tests taken at the weekend are actually recorded. These are the most accurate anybody publishes. The ONS are sometimes 11-17 days out of date hence why the r rate is not totally current.
Anyway on the figures just released this morning Ystalyfera had 25 Pontardawe 11 Rest of NPT 30.

Absolutely but there is no way of having up to date figures. The problem is that test results are not always done and recorded on the day the test was done. It is sometimes days after so the delay the figure to ensure that that the result shown is correct for that date.
It has become more of a problem since the lighthouse labs have been used due to late recording and especially over weekends. The daily figures shown for tests done on the early part of the week are often lower than later in the week for that reason and hence the positive test figure fluctuates through out the week.
What is absolutely clear though is that there has been specific problems stemming from Mynyddbach and Ystalyfera and GCG. Pontardawe a few days ago had 0-2 cases in a day. Same with Penderi and Ravenhill. There was a problem of a house party in Briton Ferry but that is beginning to rectify itself. There are very few cases in Swansea West or in most of Neath Port Talbot.
We dont know why this has spread. Possibly kids going to school and infecting others. It is more likely in the Swansea Valley than Swansea as most areas go on college buses together and the same school.
Opening schools and universities on 12 April runs the risk of spread. Hence the reason Drakeford is sensible to not open open things like Hospitality until the effect is known. | | | |
