Giving all Health care workers a one off bonus of 735 before tax so around 500 after

That's more than they are getting in England

When the Tories got back into power they had been left a record debt AND deficit by Labour. debt was still rising because until the deficit was cancelled out the debt was bound to rise.

Then of course we had the pandemic which has caused very many countries to take on masses of extra debt.

So, you could say the current problems stem back to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

Of course, when the realities of debt are pointed out to you you either run and hide or say that nearly every country has deficit and debt so why cant Wales. Its basically that you just take any reason to attack the Westminster government whether it's valid or not.

Shall we talk about Welsh Labours financial mismanagement?

Come on Cat, bit of context needed as a caveat to your first sentence surely?

I’m not defending either Sir Tone or Brown but a certain global event that occurred in 2008 had a huge impact in what was inherited in 2010.

Well yes it did have a huge impact. That was a worse than needed to be impact though as Blair and Browns reforms left the UK overexposed to the risks. They relaxed banking rules and it caused big problems. I'd never heard of sub-prime until then.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

They relaxed banking regs to some extent. The Tories were arguing that they should be relaxed even more.

So logically if the Tories had been in power and had deregulated to the extent they wanted Labour to do the end result would have been far worse.

Good news travellers arriving in England will no longer need a PCR test within two days of arrival. This applies from 11th of February just in time for half term. A big boost for holiday makers, travel firms and airports.

Of course the UK has money, having debt doesn't mean no money, it's just more hyperbole from you.

I'm sure you mean TRILLION btw!

OK, we are 13 percentage points above the average, some are better than us but how many are worse? Come on Kilky, be honest, how many EU member states have worse debt than us?
The answer is 2, France and Italy (2.65T and 2.573T respectively)
https://www.statista.com/stati So do they not have any money? Their unemployment rates are 8.2 and 10.5% respectively, the UK's is 3.8%. EU inflation is roughly the same as the UK, so who is worse off, the UK or Italy and France? Does this mean those two countries need to break up?

Having debt means you don't have enough money Almost every country has to borrow as it cannot survive on taxation alone. England is subsidied too, so there's no hand outs from the English taxpayer to Wales.

People regularly say on this forum that it's the English taxpayer that is subsidising Wales. But as you rightly say cj, when a country runs a deficit, as the UK does as a whole, the government borrows money to balance out that deficit.

And it has to be Westminster that does the borrowing because the devolved governments aren't allowed to.

Having debt means you have no money is not necessarily true . There's a difference between good and bad debt .Good debt could be paying for a higher education where the rewards are gained with a higher income or borrowing money if you own your own business and using the money to expand the business .Having a mortgage is another example where the net gains are made when the property is sold .

Yes that's an interesting fact, remember though, if you took the Welsh, Irish and Scottish deficits off the UK then England would be much better off.

The UK's deficit has increased to 65 billion during the pandemic, the three devolved countries have deficits totalling 59 billion. Pre pandemic the UK deficit was 57 billion, do the maths and suddenly you realise, if England was to ditch the rest of us they would be in profit. The UK's deficit is down to the devolved countries.

Scotland 36.3 billion
Northern Ireland 9.7 billion
Wales 13.7 billion
Total 59.7 billion

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

It is Wales though and we are a parasite that scrounges off Westminster which luckily happens to in the rich place where all the money is made.
I do wonder if you took the rich bit out then how much of a deficit would England actually have.
We have been treated like a pariah for centuries and that in itself has caused this part of UK to be in a state. All you Welshies that have left and gloat from your ivory towers are no better than those in Westminster and Rich London that has ensured where the money stays.

We've been treated badly by Westminster but also by our own inept assembly who have had over twenty years to improve ordinary citizens lives but have failed dismally . Always quick to blame others but failing in their duties. I cannot recall seeing any AM proudly announce more job creation other than those for the Vale such as Aston Martin (that came as a cost to the rest of us in subsidies) no replacement for Fords Bridgend etc
The Senedd has now on average a 18 billion pound budget , I wonder how much of that will you see as a benefit for Wales as a whole or as an example "Accelerating £105m for the Cardiff City Region Deal to fast-track projects that range from innovation and Fintech, to manufacturing and infrastructure."

With respect your argument is complete bollox.

Its like a drunk, gambling, bullying husband running up a £400,000 debt, and then telling his long suffering wife that she owes £200,000. And nobody else will want her now.

When the UK government in London borrows and spends it is not beholden on the good people of Cymru, Scotland and the north of Ireland to take on that debt ?

The uk govt will not even pay to keep the coal tips safe in Cymru, even after they extracted all our coal and all our wealth.

You simply cant have it both ways.

And do you really think Tory English would want to keep the Celtic nations in chains if it did not make economical sense to do so ? No chance.

You totally missed thr point the Uk Government would not have to borrow if it was not to pay the Subsidies to the devolved governments and the devolved governments raised as much tax as they spend. The UK government is redistributing wealth from the Rich parts of the UK to the poorer areas.
A bit like the EU regional development fund does. Although the UK pays out far more money than the EU did.

It’s a good point, but it’s not straight forward. Most of the large companies who trade across the UK are headquartered in England, if the likes of Tesco, BT paid tax on their profits generated in the 3 devolved nations to the Governments in Cardiff, Stormont and Edinburgh the picture would look a bit different, but the South East of England does generate a lot of wealth for the rest of the UK.
