I just wonder sometimes as to what you guys and gals do for a living seeing as south Wale ha virtually no industries or none as we know.

Working from home to me,seems alien. My son in law ,a serving police officer has also spent the odd day working from home.WTF.

Makes me feel a jerk

I work in the environmental impact / development sphere, basically in an office and occasionally on site.

Everything is now done online, I've been in a planning inquiry today. It was held completely online, 366 days ago there would have been about 40 people in a room.

I think the days of the office are over.

Initially fine-but the shutdown of all non-Covid research for 6 months followed by 25% capacity in the lab makes life hard managing others who are on short term research contracts. We are behind on everything and funders (mainly UKRI) are being less flexible than hoped. Been confusing for my son who needs complete order due to ASD. On the plus side have eaten very well (and more healthily) with more time to cook almost every meal from scratch, but find online teaching hard and less than satisfactory.

Thankful we and all immediate family have been healthy (my cousin who is GP up OHL's end of Wirral excepted).

Hope things turn up for all including Flash.

It hasn't made a massive difference to me personally. My wife has been working from home and my son home from school, we get shopping delivered now but little else changed.

I don't go out much anyway, beside walking the dog. That won't change untilI get my operation. Admittedly that's dragging on because of covid but c'est la vie.

We've lost a couple of people. We've put on weight. We've gone a bit greyer a bit more quickly and we've grown a year older though it feels much longer. We've saved a lot of money too and one day, when we're allowed, a holiday will definitely be happening with that money. I fancy Italy now.

Any news on the operation fella?

Working for an orthopaedic company we are now up to 90% of 2019 volumes unfortunately less so in Wales.

My advice.
Como is lovely but very expensive .Garda has better weather certainly less rain and has Verona nearby which is beautiful.
Alternatively ,rather than Maggiore, look at the smaller lakes ,like Orta ,less chocker with tourists .Inghams have a good range of package deals to the smaller lakes. A cracker near Garda -Lake Iseo-,quieter and les evening stuff but swimming is glorious and walking unbelievable.

Naples is a craphole and one to avoid. Pompeii isnt enough of a distraction from the overpowering awfulness and bedlam of this city.

A few years ago I worked on an a project in Milan Monday to Thursday & drove up to Zurich for part 2 of the project on the Friday, a breathtaking drive with stunning scenery.

Promised Mrs PJ I would take her to Milan for the weekend & drive up to Switzerland stopping off at 1 of the lakes for a few nights on the way.

My Italian colleagues told my to steer away from the famous lakes, when I do the trip I will ask them which they recommend.

Off topic a little so apologies.

It's like everywhere.Tourists effectively spoil places but trust me,the northern end of Lake Garda ,Limone,Riva are still effectively genuinely Italian. Most don't speak English which is great.

There are many small lakes but the trade off is being little to do if/when it rains and rains it does in abundance.

Few places now are tourist free.World is infinately smaller.

It'll be interesting to see where we are in five years time.

You'd think employers would be delighted to save costs on office accommodation in the long term by allowing people to work from home when possible, but there's still a lot of people out there who seem to think that office is best, and I'll include a lot of employees in that. We've had quite a few in our place who have steadfastly refused to work from home because coming into the office gives them structure, and that's fine.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Dr Page.

Not sure where she works at the moment. Last time I spoke to her (last year)she worked a couple of days in Clatterbridge and a surgery in Birkenhead. She lives in West Kirby and her eldest son is in the same class as my son. I see her most mornings but in cars!

I'm incredibly thankful that none of my family or close friends have caught Covid, never mind been bad with it. Grandparents are all still here in their early-late 80s which to be honest would still be a bit of a miracle even in a year without Covid. Nobody in the family has lost a job or been financially hurt by the Pandemic either, so all in all we've had a pretty decent time of it this last year.

On a personal note though it's been a bit of a killer. I was just starting to properly job hunt back in February/March last year having graduated from my Masters degree in December 2019, and so really any plans I had were/are scuppered till Covid blows over. So, for the time being, I'm stuck at home in Pembrokeshire (beautiful place to be stuck, admittedly) furloughed from my barely above minimum wage job in the Tourist industry, waiting for us to open back up again.

So, if anybody on here fancies paying me 20k+ a year, hit me up

It is those on furlough from low paid jobs I really feel sorry for.

Two of my sisters in law solely do bar work for a minimum wage, we helped them financially out over Xmas as they are basically living off part time pay at £6.50 per hour. They've missed out on overtime shifts and tips that they relied on in the past. This has been their situation for a year. They are single parents with kids also at home for most of the year, another job hasn't been an option.

I don't wish to turn this in to another political thread, but in Wales they still have no idea when they are likely to be back in work.

I work from home so its not been a huge impact as it has to others , but I can understand why some need a structure in their lives . You have to be disciplined to get through the work during the day otherwise its easy to fall into the trap of playing catch up at all hours. I've been "fortunate" that I'm classed as a key worker so I've been allowed to legitimately travel when I had to and on arrival its normally the case of doing a site visit meeting no one and then back home.
I did have to stay away last week in a Travel Lodge , no room cleaning, and no food other than what you bought from the nearest Sainsbury or a take away .Not a nice way to live .
