Cullen in Cabango out for Swansea City’s next push 15th Apr 2021 13:05
Ben Cabango has been disciplined by Swansea City for a serious breach of the clubs Covid Protocols last weekend. Ben has been fined two weeks wages and will not feature as a starter for the swans on Saturday at home to Wycombe Wanderers. That’s the immediate sanction on a player who has risen quickly through the Swansea academy ranks and earned himself numerous admirers. 0

Well it is relevant isn't it, as you're trying to claim he hasn't been playing due to his professionalism, which over the length of time he has been with first team has been first class, according to Cooper anyway unless he's lying. Sadly he let himself down Saturday night and has been reminded of his responsibilities by Cooper.

He will find himself in the team soon enough, we won't always have Naughton and Guehi.

And we need this lad to grow as a player and a man.
He is shedloads of potential..

I don’t really trust Cooper .no offence

I haven't claimed anything at all. I said he may not be playing due to reasons other than footballing ones considering how well we do with him in the side.

A week later he was having the police called to his house and had his manager state he needs to improve his professionalism and hope it improves.

If it was a one off and was a model pro otherwise, then Cooper wouldn't be ''hoping'' his professionalism and understanding of what it means to be a professional 24/7 improves. It would already be at the required level, incident apart.

So if we look at it logically, your guess for why he isn't playing doesn't really stack up as we are more successful with him in the team. my guess for why he isn't playing has come to light this week and Cooper has called him out on it.

Sorry you dislike that.

Correct, he has a lot of developing to do as a young man.

Things do make much more sense now.

He’s still had plenty experience this year, I don’t expect Naughton to be here next year so he will seamlessly slot in as a regular. He’s more than earned his pay rise / 4 year contract.

He has indeed, he has 30 appearances this year to Naughtons 29.

But something seems to have changed in early March and was not preferred anymore, he only featured once since the 9th of March. Up until that time he had featured in 27 of our 35 league games.

A month later he was criticized for his professionalism after featuring in only 1 of the next 6 games. He has a lot of growing off the field it looks like.

What happened in Early March? New contract weren’t it?

<<"This is something Ben 100 per cent deserves," said Swansea boss Steve Cooper.
"He has been brilliant since he joined the first-team squad. How he has developed and progressed as a person and a player has been a real credit to him.
"It's the right thing to reward him with the right contract, and it also shows the belief he has in us and the progress we want to make as a club.">>

I’d assume Cooper and his national team keeper/defence coach as asked him to work on a few things and just think Naughton is the best bet at the moment, obviously Naughton suffered the thigh injury and suspension but since then he’s been given the nod. Not sure I agree but I can understand their reasoning. Unfortunately for him I can’t see him playing in a 2 now other than injuries.

We have no idea what happened. But it all seemed pretty sudden.

Very odd that he went from 27 appearances in 35 games, then 1 in the following 7 (ironically coinciding with our terrible run) - and then followed by a public dressing down regarding his professionalism.

As I said, a contract doesn’t mean anything in reality other than the players value to the club. He’s a valuable asset make no mistake. He absolutely deserves it, our performances with him have been superb, much better than without him. A fantastic young player lacking professionalism is hardly an alien concept.

But he has a lot to improve on off the field as Cooper alludes to.

You may need to write to Stevie Cooper and the number crunchers at the club because they definitely disagree.

In my opinion, he edges towards Guehi and Naughton for the below reason:

“He is brave on the ball and that level of experience is good in terms of bringing that balance to the dressing room.”

Obviously the above quote is regarding Naughton which in my opinion is why he is preferred in the 3, but it would also apply to Guehi who is by far our best defender in possession. I’m not bothered by what the stat say, haven’t even checked, you only need to watch the games to know that. His first touch, can take it on either foot, pass with either foot. That’s why he’s picked in the 2 alongside Bennett.

They disagree about what? He has appeared more than Naughton this year.

Cooper has said he needs to improve his professionalism and his understanding of what it means to be a professional athlete 24/7 and has only played 1 of the last 7 (coinciding with our bad run).

I would only need to write to them if I thought he wasn't picking him for footballing reasons, but that isn't what I think. I thought that was obvious?

Yes 24/7, after a game, aka relating to the incident Saturday night not before.

He’s not picking him for football reasons. When Naughton has been fit or not suspended, he’s played, whether that be March, after March or before March.

If it was a single incident and not a reflection on his professionalism or attitude then there would be no need to hope it improves, it would already be at the required level. It really isn’t that difficult.

You guess he’s not picking him for footballing reasons. I disagree. Naughton had splinters in his backside watching Cabango play for numerous games until whatever happened to make Cabango become out of favour.

Naughton was not suspended or injured for 30 games. Be that before or after March.

Prior to March:-

- Cabango started 12 times when Naughton has been available who began the match on the bench.

- Naughton started 7 times when Cabango has been available who began the match on the bench.

It all changed from March, and it makes sense with the recent events and the lack of professionalism needing to be present for in an individual for that to take place.

Naughton was injured for a spell of 5 games in a row in December up, then came straight back into the team.

Cabango made a chunk of starts at the start of season as the central man in the three, but this was all before Bennett signed. Bennett made his debut against Coventry and as the season has gone on he's decided he's the first choice central man with Naughton to his right. Cabango has been a more than capable deputy when one or the other is out for whatever reason.

You can question Cabango's professional attitude etc, that's up to you, he made the mistake Saturday and has been punished accordingly for it, all Cooper's comments. Badlands on here has said from the start that Cooper doesn't rate Cabango, of course I don't agree with Cooper's opinion on that, I think he's a quality young defender, but in the big games, before, or after March, with all fit, Cooper has always reverted to his trusted 3, Guehi, Bennett and Naughton, so it backs up Badlands opinion unfortunately.

Rodon was the central of the 3, Cabango was on the right at the start of the season, he was clearly the preferred option.

First 4 games of the season where we went undefeated all 4 games this was the case, against Preston, Birmingham, Wycombe and Millwall. Naughton on the bench for all these.

Then we played Huddersfield where Cabango was the central and Naughton was the right and we lost.

The next game against Coventry Bennett came into the central role, Cabango was again chosen on the right and Naughton back to the bench, same for the game after against Bristol City, we continued being undefeated with him there. Then it was a mixture of all 3 from then on in.

From March onwards Cabango has not had a look in despite the side playing better and being more successful with him in it, in any of the defensive roles.

Seemed logical it may well be something other than football as I said then, the very next month this happens and Cooper is making those comments. You are welcome to think he isn't being picked for footballing reasons, but that doesn't stack up for me and have shown you and explained why.

Rodon, like Guehi, is more than capable of both roles. He’s as good bringing the ball out of defence or joining in further forward as any centre back I can remember.

If he was starting centrally with Cabango outside him, that was pretty nominal. He was certainly playing the role of the defender who carries the ball into midfield and gets further forward when we are attacking. Ben stayed back and came up for corners.

I was wondering where you got the stat he’d played at RCB roughly as much as Naughton from when we were discussing it earlier. We did set up like that defending set pieces and it may well have been presented that way on info graphics. In open play though, Ben was the primary centre back and Joe was the ball player.

They are all capable of it, have all played there and all done well. Cabango more successful than Naughton there however.

Rodon was absolutely the central of the 3, without question. Again that was also due to what he brought to the team without the ball, he would often be the one in the central position throwing his body on the line for blocks from central shots.

Strengths without the ball is just as important (maybe more important) in defence than strengths with the ball.

Yeah fair enough, no arguments from me on that one. Cooper just doesn't class him as first choice centre half anymore. For me it's football reasons, without a shadow of a doubt, so we will agree to disagree.

Wouldn't mind hearing Badlands take on it though? He said from the start Cooper never rated Ben. Not sure why?

Cabango’s 88 touch heat map:-

Clearly Cabango was the defender going forward more and Rodon doing what he does best commanding the area.

Have to admit I’m surprised by that. Joe only had a few games this season, but I can remember him bringing the ball forward regularly, occasionally going past people. Can’t remember Ben doing it at all.

I will say I’d see far more logic in playing Ben over Naughton with Rodon and Guehi in the team. You’d still have two of the three comfortable on the ball and you’d have Cabangos extra physicallity. Replace Rodon with Bennett and you need more of a footballer in there, because for all his bravery, organisational and leadership strengths, Bennet is not the kind of player you’d expect to be crossing the halfway line in open play or want in possession in a tight situation.
