Ok.Working class roll call 19:29 - Apr 20 with 2372 viewsonehunglow

As 8 Miles high seems to believe it is a prerequisite for this site ,why not have a roll call for those who care classed as such .

Better still, anyone middle class on here .Anyone brave enough.

Any Tory voter, anyone not voting labour..

Just what small minded people we have

Graded and degraded

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Not for me. I would think of service jobs. Catering, hospitality, shop workers, cleaners, warehouse workers, food production etc. as the larger part of ‘working class’ now.

That reads rather like a loose assembly of the low paid, Prof.

Yes indeed it is, hence the italics .
I certainly don't consider myself anything but working class ,perhaps others might not but my attitude to life has been that to earn money you have to work , you want to better yourself then work harder. to me there is another sub class beneath the working class, those who choose not to work but rely on the state and are quite happy to pick up what ever they can in terms of benefits or small time pilfering. I've voted labour for most of my life and UKIP recently but admit to understanding the concept of conservatism but never voted for them , perhaps my parents attitudes still have subliminal influence on me.

But, he's right though, have you ever worked for a living?

No idea why you would ask me that .... and not other posters ?

I could tell you ....i never ever worked..... or .... i could tell you i am Terry Matthews right hand man ? Means nothing as i could post any reply.

I am more interested why you feel it’s appropriate to ask me that ?
Its not appropriate btw.

I don't care what you do, or don't do for a living.
You could tell me any old bollox. Exactly the same.

So i try to focus on the post rather than the poster.
You should try it.

Never ever Tory.
Thatcher was too much, now the useless Brexidiot Johnson.

Always Labour until 2015, when Jezza took over. ....
Plaid since then.

UKIPer .... you are just playing with us now. 😂😂
Stop it mun.

So ...,you are a Nigel Farage fan boy ?
Or is it that Ann Widdecombe who has lured you in ... ?
Or Aaron Banks and Julia Hateful-Spewer...?

Did you like the air raid sirens that welcomed your boy Nigel on stage ?
He was far too young for the war, but likes to pretend.

Did you party like its 1974 ?
Poor dab.

Its hard to separate the post and the poster on this one.

Yet, you seem quite adept at asking other posters questions, and trying to humiliate people.

And as for what I do or did, I replied to a post from Loh about Steelworkers on here, and you used that against me constantly.

Yes. Relatively low skilled and poorly paid. Insufficient to maintain a family. ‘McJobs’ as they have been coined. More ‘industrial’ jobs- like Airbus or Vauxhall near me are increasingly skilled and better paid. The heavy industries of my childhood have largely gone. Old fashioned labouring is perhaps the last of these.

Class is transient and completely interchangeable.

Anyone can make something of themselves if they work hard enough.

To a large extent that’s true. But in the U.K. there are certainly barriers and gatekeepers that can make that passage harder or easier. I’ve reached the ceiling in my job-I don’t want to move to management. Has my background and schooling been an impediment-yes, but far from insurmountable. But have sat on enough internal and external panels to know there is still huge and often conscious bias. We (South Wales) don’t game the system very well. Our image is poor.

Thanks for the replies. Some interesting ones.
So it seems it' all about low wage.
I cannot see that.
Take the example of footballers from lowly/deprived/poor,single parent backgrounds who make it big in football and earn tens of millions of pounds per annum. They choose to live in "middle class" areas and reside on homes that were often built for mill owners, shipping magnets,Judges, Industry mega bosses and financial wizards, who often paid their employees the low wages the very working classes are paid.

Many from middle class homes hit the dope and end up in a "working class" area.

It is profoundly insulting to stereotype ,brand and catagorise people into any group.

I would urge people not to be graded by society/government in this way.

Thanks

If you own your own home, and i'm assuming by promotion it means a supervisory role then it lifts you into lower middle class.

I bought my council house (I eagerly await the brickbats ) not because I wanted to step up the ladder of class hood but it made financial sense to do so . My job pays well but that's reward for the training and the responsibilities I have. I still live on a predominantly council estate but I consider my self working class so pick the bones out of that one .

It is all about self consideration and I get that, which is why I have problems with labour politicians from privileged backgrounds purporting to be working class champions.

What is worse is people being referred to ordinary

Doing all that training and getting a better well paid job, owning your own property, puts you up the ladder a bit. What you want to think you are is irrelevant. Many are proud of their working class roots, and that's fine, but as someone posted earlier, social stratification - class is an inappropriate term, is transient, and we can move up or down the ladder. There is no definitive classification as nobody fits perfectly into any slot, but there are classification tables which will put people roughly into strata.

Sorry to disappoint you but it's what others think which is irrelevant and doesn't affect how I feel , think or act . I'm comfortable with all of them
