Where do you think it originates from, what is the most likely scenario, will we ever know?

Not propoganda ? It would explain why many ppl had the symptoms here in December, myself and family included. I thought it was flu, but it was different to that and it lingered for a long time.

How do you explain the lack of excess deaths and hospitalisation?

Yes- so did I. But more likely flu, a severe cold or even respiratory mycoplasma infection which was at an unusually high prevalence.

The PCR testing of wastewater showing early positives is pretty dubious. Those who also decry false positives in PCR testing should like the fact the signals are so weak there is a significant chance they are false positives as they are at Ct39. The also use a different gene that diagnostic testing which is less specific. The other paper using serology is almost certainly a cross-reaction and being investigated for scientific malpractice.

The current consensus is emergence in Wuhan in mid November, with some likely cases in Europe by December which went undiagnosed. The promed alert of unusually pneumonia in Wuhan was 31/12/19.

As for source-almost certainly an animal-to-human jump whether through perturbance of a habitat for bats or directly or through an intermediate host at the wet market (Wuhan Seafood Market). Changes in human:animal contact have driven most emerging viruses in the last 60 years-Ebola and HIV are either habitat incursion or bushmeat, Hendra and Nippah -from bats into horses in Australia and onto humans for Hendra and bats via pigs into humans in Indonesia for Nippah. Incursions onto bat territory in both cases.

Wet markets have also been a risk-especially of reassortment of influenza and likely the source of H1N1 avian influenza.

Accidental release of a modified virus is possible-accidents happen (FMD from Pirbright being a prime example), but as for the research being sinister or a plot-you would not be picking a coronavirus as a candidate for a bioweapon. The Mail article is hilarious-Chinese Government backing virus research. Christ, they will loose their s**t when they find out where viral research is funded from in the UK, and even more so when they, find out about the many joint UK:China programmes.
Pathogen 'hunting' -discovery of new viruses (and indeed bacteria) is pretty commonplace and quite trendy. Made easy by portable, low cost genome sequencing. What is even funnier is the Mail also posted an article on how an undergraduate student at UEA in Norwich had found a novel bat coronavirus in the UK. UEA must be a danger for society and a hotbed of communism (as well as Malcolm Bradbury's creative writing course).

It's laughable that people claim not follow conspiracy theories, yet are happy to share the most ridiculous tin foil hattery once again. The only element of indisputable truth is that Chinese authorities delayed informing WHO and underplayed the severity and extent of disease.

Zoonotic infections have and will remain a big threat. How we manage animals and disrupt their habitat ensures this. The next threat could equally come from the West as from China or elsewhere in Asia.

Could go on, but my day off and going to enjoy a walk in the sun.

A time lag, and it would have affected the young and healthy at first if it was being brought back to this country from holidaymakers and travellers from Europe. It would have taken a while to get into old ppls homes etc.

i've had the flu and colds, but this was different, but we will never know as there was no testing. My wife who works on the covid ward, is the only one of her colleagues who didn't get the covid, so immunity maybe?

Why would the sewer samples be dubious? What do the Italian scientists have to gain my making dubious claims , and are they less able that scientists from other nations?Too much of a correlation to be dismissed

High profile and impact publications-one of the main criteria science is judged on. Far too much opportunistic stuff like this.

As for illness-colds are multiple causes, flu can have a range of symptoms-and Mycoplamsa pneumoniae causes many symptoms that could be mistaken for Covid. As I said there was a spike in 2019 (especially in South Wales) and is pretty unresponsive to therapies.

But there hasn't been a time lag before, we went from very low cases in to hospitals being overwhelmed in two months despite some pretty severe restrictions.

If it was here in Autumn 2019 we'd have been in the same situation in early winter 2019 with huge numbers of deaths and overwhelmed hospitals.

At that time social distancing hadn’t been invented. The pre Christmas rush of shopping, sports events, concerts, theatre, cinemas, nightclubs and everyone visiting granny in her care home would have devastated us.

Yes-i think there were likely to be earlier cases than recorded, but nothing before late December. Would have been a surge of severe respiratory disease through late 2019

You missed the point entirely. Young fit healthy ppl coming from Italy would have been unwell or even asymptomatic, and because of the time it takes to get into circulation and to be transmitted to older and more vulnerable could well have been months and would have built up slowly

There are only so many symptoms the human body can have. They are fairly generic. It's not like we have tons of error codes like a computer.

This didn't feel like anything that i had had before. The cough lasted months and kept recurring.

I had it late December, and mrs cj had it over Xmas, and so did the rest of the family except my youngest daughter. My next door neighbour a fit guy in his late 20s had it and could hardly walk up the stairs.

Sound identical to what I had September to December 2019. Which I compounded by cracking a rib after a fall

I haven't missed the point at all.

So you think only young people would have caught it in the 3 months that you say it was around during the Autumn? These young people don't live with older people, work with older people, go to pubs and restaurants with older people or go to any crowded areas with older people? Those older people, in turn, didn't bother with other older people?

It was contained in the younger population so much that it wasn't noticed, at all, by anyone in the medical profession?

But then in six weeks from February we saw hospitals being overrun and over 1000 people dying each day. Something that was replicated this year despite restrictions.

It is completely obvious that it wasn't here until at least Christmas.

I hate to break this to you, but Christmas is in December. From Sept when it was in Italy, by the time travellers took it to the Uk, and we aren't talking large numbers, it would have taken a while to get into circulation to any significant numbers. Then it would have been passed around younger people who would have then passed it to older ppl.

My mother was llL at the time She had a heart scan as doc thought it was her ticker, but thankfully it was ok. The diagnosis was a mystery virus in the chest and it wasn't the flu.I went with her to the doctors in Skewen and could tell they didn't know what it was, but it wasn't the flu. A few days later I picked it up and then Mrs CJ over xmas, followed by the rest of the family.

Italian researchers told Reuters in March that they reported a higher than usual number of cases of severe pneumonia and flu in Lombardy in the last quarter of 2019 in a sign that the new coronavirus might have circulated earlier than thought.

So you think it was here in September but we didn't see a peak until the end of March despite there being no social restrictions? That's seven months.

But from a low point in infections in August we saw a massive rise in infections, hospitalisation and deaths within two months, despite social restrictions?

It sounds like a different virus was around in Autumn 2019 to me.

I didn't say it was here in Sept, it was in Italy then. It could have been been brought back here gradually resulting in some cases in late December, maybe even earlier in small numbers. We knew it was here in feb, as the Swans game at Sunderland was called off. These viruses take a while to take hold in the community, it doesn't spread overnight

If you look at the actual paper-not the report, it's a theoretical model. It also suggests that ventilation and mask wearing have a bigger impact than distance. That's going to sit well with the deniers-if true of course. All models are wrong -though some are useful of course!
