| Farming deals post Brexit on 13:01 - May 20 by Professor | Problem is as well Gwyn, is we are at least 40% short in domestic supply. But we have lost the idea that we need to utilise food and especially meat products as much as possible. People expect a 'clean' product in nice packaging-no bones, skin or gristly bits. Offal is seen as an anathema by many. We had a meal outlast weekend-I had Ox Tongue. How often do you see that? |
I’ve been rummaging about looking for this, I’m sat in the kitchen leafing through it as we speak. Perhaps I should post it off to the MAFF, they seem fresh out of ideas.

Yes , it's why we don't need to refrigerate our eggs like they do. We also don't have to chlorine wash the chickens either.

We can. The political and economic will is not there. And no doubt complaints about poly tunnels and why there are not courgettes, aubergines or tomatoes available in March. MAFF was killed off after foot and mouth in 2001. A negative connotation to the name. The political and economic will. Sounds a familiar sentence Lohengrin

Interesting stuff, Gwyn. The RRA were early heralds preaching the benefits of the organic and free range.

Doesn’t that just speak volumes about the sheer scale of the overpopulation problem? That book was published about a decade before I was born, Lord alone knows what Britain’s population will be a decade after I’ve gone. It doesn’t bear thinking about.

I think the Covid crisis has provided graphic illustration as to just how precarious an over-reliance on imports can be.

I would put eggs in the fridge-stops spoilage as they become more porous over time

Chilling them makes them more porous. A chef told me not to do that.

The UK vaccination program was/is an undoubted success and is a good example of a Brexit benefit. Using it as the same example when anyone points out a possible problem with Brexit isn’t a long term position.

In 1850 the population of England was only 3 times that of Ireland. Staggering.

Its not a good example of any sort of Brexit benefit. The UK vaccines were bought (largely from the EU) whilst still in the transitional period and subject to EU rules. Those rules didn’t prevent the UK’s stockpiling. Thankfully, the EU allowed export, unlike the UK which has still not exported. Facts, eh?

No vaccines were delivered while we were in the EU. We were able to order vaccines from anywhere in the world because we were no longer in the EU. That has allowed the UK to have one of the top three vaccination programmes in the World while the EU beauracrats and politicians are still arguing about who's fault their lack of vaccines is. Don't forget the EU broke the withdrawal agreement with two months of signing it as they banned vaccines from being move from the ROI to Ni both in the single market. A hasty retreat following international outrage particularly from the Irish government. Still none of the unelected bureaucrats were sacked for making this decision. No evidence of any stockpiling as the UK government distributed all the vaccine it had throughout the UK. Drakeford did stockpile in cases Wales ran out but after press and TV outrage he soon changed his mind. [Post edited 21 May 2021 11:27]
