If he's the man making the signings, imo needs stepping down..why would you sign Liam Walsh who has a history of injuries in his career, that's one the main things you look at in a player when you make signings, and low and behold the season ain't even started and he got a hamstring injury,I don't think he has made one signing that has convinced me,maybe Bennett and perhaps Lowe if he improves on last season,,but signing Walsh who is probably on a whack..is criminal

When your head of recruitment it’s hard not to get some credit for decent signings.

He was head of recruitment for just over a year - July 2016 to November 2017. Before that he was "First Team Scout & Scouting Advisor" for a third party company working with Brentford and Midtjylland.

I genuinely don't get it.

Bennett was a good signing. Bidwell's been a good signing. Smith has been a good signing. Lowe has been a tremendous success, Manning a handy member of the squad and Whittaker should have featured a hell of a lot more, yet all people want to do is slag off the guy widely believed to have been the main influence behind bringing them in?

Why are some people so determined to pretend that he doesn't have a pretty good success rate, even more so when you consider that he was paired with a manager hugely reluctant to utilize any player who wasn't previously an England u17.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Last paragraph is key for me. We had players to play a certain way, cooper couldn't set a team up that way. IMO opinion that's why he's not here.

Has Bennett been good? Played half our games last season due to knocks and niggles, dropped for the playoffs. Casual to a fault and has had some howlers that a younger player would be raked over the coals for. But because hes over 30 he's been vital expereince or some such blather.

Smith did a job as a backup player on a free. Not the "proper DM" that was going to displace Grimes as some on here predicted. I'm not confident at all of the prospect of him being a regular in our midfield this season. Lets others play his football for him, passes men on and doesn't offer for the ball.

Manning's not had much of a look in. Shown flashes of good and bad in his appearances. He and Whittaker obviously not fancied by Cooper.

Yep.

Pretty much all of Scott's work over the last two years has to be viewed through the lens of a manager who wanted to do things a different way. Don't doubt we'd have seen more of Peterson too.

Agree with a lot of this ....Bennett tends not to be comfortable on the balll ane we tended to hoof it more when he played

Steve Rands gone.
Who's going to do his job then?
Didn't Scott say during that long article how important Rands was to the project?

Looking at the short write ups of the new backroom staff, the new GK coach and analyst seem like downgrades to me.

I can’t help noticing he did bring in a few decent players during that time.
And made Brentford a decent whack of cash.

Rico Henry, Ollie Watkins, Neal Maupay, Ryan Wood, there s a few others, but you would know more than me on that.

Yep.

Scott sourcing players and making recommendations is his job as head of recruitment. Head of recruitment, manager and chief executive should then get together and work to bring the preferred options to the club.

The days of a manager and manager alone having responsibility for bringing players in are long, long gone. Martin will have a say. Players he recommends himself will certainly be considered, but ultimately he's only part of the process.

We were left right up sh*t creek when Reeves buggered off with Martinez, and to a lesser extent when Potter moved on. That cannot happen. The club's scouting systems must remain independent of team management.

Agreed, Doc. Scott has played an instrumental role, with several clubs, in scouting, recruiting and signing many players who have been very successful for those clubs. As chief scout, head of recruitment, whatever the title, it has been his main remit to source quality players from all over the world who also pair with the values, playing style, budget, data etc. with the club he is working for at the time. He has been extremely successful doing so, his track record is there for all to see.

He is well aware of the various strengths and weaknesses, advantages and limitations, that comes with different jobs at different levels and what it requires from decisionmakers at those clubs in order to secure quality players who also understand these aspects as well. Working for Swansea is much different than working for Brentford, working for Brentford is much different than working for Watford, and so on and so forth. Working for each of these clubs means working under completely different parameters, which would result in completely different profiles of players being identified, scouted and eventually brought in. Then add in different managers and their set of contacts and the complexity of the various processes at play become evident. Then add in what is occurring globally around football, locally around football, globally and locally around business, Covid, Brexit, so forth and there are a lot of different factors to consider.

As an example, someone says Brentford only recruit Danish players, well yes, there is a specific tie-in at the club for well-known reasons, but their two biggest successes have been Watkins and Maupay, English and French players, both scouted and identified during Scott’s time there. As head of recruitment/chief scout he was integral to them signing. To what degree no one can be sure, insomuch as no one can truly be sure of anything within football or business in general when you are on the outside looking in. Brentford were also not known for their smart recruitment until Scott began working for them. But Scott has gone on record as saying that he works with various profiles of players and identifies them and scouts them over a long period of time, with multiple alternatives. This is how most top level clubs operate, and especially the smart clubs who are renowned for their recruitment setups.

We are now a professionally-run club in this regard looking for the right type of players and using many different ways of analyzing and identifying the right player within those lists of targets. We don’t rely on certain agents and players solely performing well in one game against us anymore, which was the way we recruited for a long time before his arrival. Another example of Scott’s work, two clubs with very smart decisionmakers and recruitment, Brentford and Watford, have entrusted him with the keys to that department. Therein lies the answer. We are a much better club with him than without.

Because scott has had a number of windows where pmatershave been signed and not had hardly any game time or improved our squad, that must tell you something about his signings as fir Walsh injured most last season and we sign someone injury prone, and guess what he's injured again

Let’s give Walsh a chance at least before we start to criticize the kid, AJ. If he’s out all year then we can start asking questions but the season is one game old.

A player of immense talent, with proven quality, that we were lucky to sign in the first place, on a free and reportedly on half the wages Byers has been for the past couple seasons. Swapping those two is a masterstroke, honestly. I believe Walsh needs games more than anything and the rest will come to the fore, and he will get that with us. We’ll see what happens.

If Grimes goes we certainly need another body in midfield, preferably another starter-level player, which I am confident we will have in a short period of time. It looks as if Downes is that player, hopefully, and he is quality. Remain calm.

As for Scott, he has made some mistakes over the years, but that comes with the territory when you are involved in recruitment. Every player is not going to be a gem, and some will be disappointing. But his overall track record at several clubs, including ours, is very impressive and that is just reality. When compared to what came before, he looks even better.

Piröe, Joseph, Walsh, Whittaker and Downes are all excellent signings for the profile we are and should be looking for - young, talented, pedigree, looking for the right club. I think they have found that with us, and Scott will be judged largely on their ability to prove that.

Disagree,,when your involved in recruitment, you have got to weigh up everything about a player,on and off the field, how they play is a big one obviously and their talent, also their character away from football their private life, but a big one is their past injury record,if a player has a proven injury record stay well away,I understand players who never get injured drive their price up,but its not worth signing players if they never fit,or fit for quarter season, another thing who says he's on half what byers was on...I doubt that as well
