They say it's hitting 3%.

Surely it's nearer 10% or more.

Venezuela was a basket case long before the sanctions were imposed in 2017. Interestingly Biden continues the Trump approach.

https://www.worldoil.com/news/

At one time under Chavez, Venezuela was doing very well. He took many out of hunger, it had one of the world's largest student bodies, it had many independent tv stations and some of the freest elections - according to the UN.

Then came the interference of the US and the big corporations, who instigated an attempted coup by the middle classes. He had the support of the working classes and the military, which is why it failed, another American failure. It's very much like what was attempted in Cuba, and they failed there too.

Biden following on after Trump is inevitable, as US foreign policy doesn't change with it's presidents.

It went well for a while and then the oil price dropped exposing enormous amounts of borrowing and an overreliance on state ownership which could no longer be funded.

The sanctions were imposed as a result of perceived political and electoral fraud after the economy collapsed, US meddling in Central America continues as usual, but building a huge state infrastructure on the back of a single commodity was not appropriate.

No, it wasn't because of electoral fraud, because Jimmy Carter went out there with the UN and said it was one of the fairest he had ever seen. Chavez won by popular vote

The election of Maduro not Chavez was perceived as fraudulent.

Hungary and Poland have the highest inflation rates in the EU and they are both run by extreme right wing govts.

Not sure anyone would call Hungary and Poland extreme right wing and the inflation rate is tiny compared to the extreme left wing regime in Venezuela.

Yes they are. They aren't as extreme right as some of course. The situation in Venezuela is because of outside influences and not the regime

Here's an account from a left leaning media organisation. The country was a cluster of internal issues.

It takes a special kind of stupid to push the belief that Venezuela's problems aren't a total result of its Governments actions.

Next they'll be claiming that Zimbabwe hasn't been turned into a total shithole by Zanu-PF.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

It was the regime. Venezuela had the second largest oil reserves in the world. The regime seized the oil companies producing the oli. Result no new investment or maintenance and oil production has flew ever since. From a peak of 3.4 million barrels a year at its peak to 0.5 million barrels currently.

Another of their mistakes was giving every a huge handout . They amount was so high all the farmers stopped working as they got more for not working. Result Venezuela once self sufficient in food had to start importing food. With plummeting oil revenues it defaulted in its international loads.

Result rampant inflation, mass statvation, collapse of health system and 5 million of its people have fled the country.

You just contradicted yourself there. No outside investment. I will let that sink in and hopefully the various nuances will strike a chord with you, although i somehow doubt it.

I said no new investment. I did not mention outside investment. Why did the Venezuelan government not invest in its oil field? Clearly no overseas investors were going to invest in oil if they ran the risk of their assets being confiscated by an extreme left wing government.

Outside investment has to come from outside. It was the same with Russia. there was no investment from outside into the oil and gas industry. That's how Russia was opened up and the cold war ended Sanctions and interference from the US didn't exactly encourage investment.

The petro dollars , is Americas lifeline. They earn billions from it, therefore they have to keep oil prices high enough to make money from it.They like to control the price and do that my influencing world output. It's what the conflict in Iraq was all about. It's what Opec also did after the war of 1973.

The US doesn't want Venezuela or any other country to increase production and interfere with the production rates and hence the price. They don't like countries dealing in euro or any other currencies.

Wherever you see conflict with oil producing countries, you can usually see the hand of the US somewhere or other.

The official figures are calculated using 10,000s of different items not just a few items which may have gone up by 10%

Happy to accept the figures of 3% from the ONS which is an independent body.

I still think it is nearer 10%, probably more.

The products in the inflation basket are changed every month.

It’s insane that gas & electricity are given the same relevance has for example blue tax or super glue and the proportion of household spend for any one item is not taken into consideration.

True Inflation at a guess I would say is around 10%

Petrol has gone up by 10% hasn't it, I'm sure it was below 1.25 per litre a few months back but it's around 1.39 now. If petrol goes up, everything goes up. The government is scamming the inflation rates so their friends in big business can talk down any pay deals and they can talk down public sector deals too.

In my opinion!

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

They are not over 10,000 items in basket all individually weighted based on volumes sold.

A tube of glue would probably have a weighting of 0.00001%, while petrol could easily be 10% large weighted items would also include heating, electricity, food, council tax, housing costs.

He never mentioned outside investment and he repeated "new investment" and we know the USA interferes, they interfere with everything tht threatens US corporate profits. Like the UK's proposed digital taxes.

I had a chat today with a friend who owns a local independent builders merchants.
He says there has been an average 34% increase on building materials in the last 12 months.
Truly frightening.

A mate of mine is in the trade, he’s heard one of the big developers is looking at mothballing a load of new developments, they aren’t prepared to pay the current price for materials with a potential economic slow down, increase in interest rates and house price drop in the offing. Was talking to a surveyor about house prices the other day, these’s still a healthy activity in the market down here, but lenders are looking for higher deposits and starting to scrutinise houses prices and reducing values.
