Energy prices 09:59 - Mar 20 with 11412 viewsKilkennyjack

Big big profits for the energy suppliers, big big price hikes for us lot.

Shirley people will not be able to cope with such price rises ?

We should re-nationalise immediately.
Too important for the markets to handle, with a built in short term profit view of everything.

Beware of the Risen People

Hence why the Tories are trying to ban protests/strikes. They are stitching up the country big time.

Hinkley point B nuclear power station closed today after producing clean safe nuclear power for 46 years which was 6 years more than planned. It use to produce 3% of the UK' s electricity which showed the folly of Labour stopping the building of any more nuclear power stations the last time they were in power. Fortunately out current government reversed that decisions but it takes well over 10 years to go through the planning process and 5 years to build. Hinckley point C is due to open in 2027.

I bet Germany is now regretting closing all its nuclear power stations. It shows the folly and pandering to the green minority.

Even France's ageing nuclear power stations are now producing less electricity. France's policy was to reduce the % of electricity generated from Nuclear power from 70% to 50% in 2025 though this date has been put back to 2035. France has recently announced it will build six new nuclear reactors and consider building another 8.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

More Whataboutery! Energy cap prices are going through the roof, since last summer they’ve almost doubled and are likely to nearly double again come next winter. Meanwhile some providers are making record profits while a lot of people are sliding in to fuel poverty. We’ve needed a comprehensive energy strategy which will deliver a secure energy supply for years and numerous governments have failed to deliver this.

Hinckley Point B ! With our country facing huge increases in the cost of generating power and potential blackouts during the forthcoming winter you’d have thought the government would have had the sense to engage with the the operators of Hinckley Point B to extend its operational life (which would have been easily achievable) do there was additional capacity in the network, but no the people in charge at HMG forgot and by the time it was on their radar it was too late as the decommissioning process had been signed off.

You’ve pointed the finger at Labour, they commissioned a number of White papers and reviews of energy policy and they actually got the ball rolling in relation to Hinckley C in 2008.

The history of the recent Conservative governments isn’t great - Hinckley C was put on hold between 2013 and 2016 3 years because the government failed to agree a price for the electricity with EDF. Let’s not forget the 2 nuclear power stations that Theresa May’s government cancelled in 2019.
At various stages in the last 12 years potential stakeholders in UK nuclear power station projects have included the Russian state and Chinese state - that’s radio rental because we should control our own nuclear sites!

Actually electricity and gas supply companies are not making a profit as their prices are capped . It is the oil and gas companies that supply the generators that are making the money. Also the electricity generators who , supply electricity from wind power, solar, nuclear who are making profits as their costs have not increaed and they are sell their electricity on the Wholesale market. The energy price crisis is a global problem.

You are right Labour stopped any new nuclear power stations being built from 1997 and only gave permission for planning for Hinkley point C to start in 2008 without any commercial agree in place.

Fortunately it was the Conservatives who actually got a commercial agreement with EDF to build it.

Hinckley point life has been extended by nearly 20 years the current operation cannot be extended as the power station has reached the end of its life.
