That’s a very tired view and one that is not accurate. Half of inmates don’t work at all while in prison.
Penal labour is a massive part of rehabilitation for those that do, the studies are clear. Most labour is voluntary of course, it allows a prisoner out of their cell and focus on something other than their crimes and the long road ahead.
Those who do participate in some kind of labour are far less likely to return to prison after release than those that don’t. |  |

Ah ok, I don't know a lot about the American penal code but on the face of it, I think it could be used in this country to be honest, a lot of community projects could benefit. I know we have community service in lieu of time in gaol, but there must be more inmates who would be far more of a benefit to society rather than just being locked up for 23hrs a day. What are they going to do when they get cold and hungry? Its a vicious cycle for many.
Give them and education and train them in skills they can use to work. Any money they make should be reinvested in helping those who are rehabilitated re enter society. | |
