I don't know much about what it means technically for steel making but the blast furnaces are a massive source of Co2 and other unpleasant stuff so it has to happen or the entire works could close. The government pulled the plug on funding they had promised apparently, I'm a bit surprised it's been publicised but I suppose that's down to the cash being withdrawn and Tata wanting to draw attention to it. It was top secret as far as I was aware.

I believe Port Talbot is one of the last mass production iron works in the country we will always need iron if we don't produce it here we will have to rely on other countries that's a sad state of affairs and how is shipping in doing the environment any good

If I remember correctly when the nuclear power station in Anglesey shut down the aluminium processing industry went with it as they had a contract for lower energy rates. Also….I stand to be corrected…. I’m not sure ark technology can produce the various types of steel required by different industries…chemical, car, medical etc. I’m under the impression that they use and recycle waste steel products.

Should the taxpayer bail out private companies? Hardly a conservative and free market principle

Ah right see what you mean, I worked there for 44 years, arc furnace is nowhere good as blast furnace, but it's the way emissions are going

I am sure Drakeford's Senedd would be happy to provide the funding to invest in one of Wales last remaining heavy industries.

It certainly is a tricky one. Without the steelworks 4000+ people will be out of work with no prospect of another job in the area. PT is also one of the last remaining steelworks in the UK, closing would just mean importing more. From the ever polluting China.

It was the Westminster government that pulled the plug on funding.
