| April 1st again? 07:37 - Apr 17 with 5106 views | SullutaCreturned | I just read that they're renaming the Brecon Beacons because "beacon" was a carbon burning signal and its incompatible with the drive for net zero. Surely it's a wind up? Beacons is a historical reference. It's not like it's offensive in any way and you can have electric beacons too. What next, rename Belisha's or not be allowed to be a "beacon of hope"? Crazy, stupid world. | | | | |

I'm not offended by the re-branding, but I do think it's pointless waste of money, money that needs spending in much more important projects that would actually enhance the area. Apologies if my opinion offends.

| April 1st again? on 20:33 - Apr 17 by majorraglan | The name Bannau Brycheiniog predates the name Brecon Beacon by at least a couple of hundred years. I’m a fluent Welsh speaker and use the language in my every day life, in both professional and social settings. My first reaction on hearing this was one of surprise, the Beacons are relatively well know across the U.K. and given most people will continue to refer to the area as the Brecon Beacons I think it’s a bit of a pointless exercise. Maybe over 50plus years the term Brecon Beacons will disappear but it will take time and I doubt any of us will be around to see it. Name changing and reverting to indigenous names is something that’s been gathering momentum across the world for the last 30 odd years, Ayers Rock changed to Ayers Rock/ Uluru and it’s now changed again to Ulurur /Ayers Rock, in a few years its likely to change again to Uluru. Felix, Brecon already has a Welsh name and one which predates the name Brecon, - it’s Aberhonddu and it appears on quite a few road signs. |
I think I will still use the original viking name for Swansea rather than later Welsh descriptive name mouth of the tawe.

I wonder how many Australians are insisting on calling Ulura, Ayers Rock? 🙄 Welsh place names in Welsh doesn’t seem to controversial to me 🤷🻠

| April 1st again? on 20:38 - Apr 17 by SullutaCreturned | That's a sensible post in my opinion. Brecon is the anglicised version of Brycheiniog. I see the change as not needed and certainly not for the "net zero" reason given. There are more important things to spend money on. |

Will you criticize the enourmous Brexit costs, huge PPE wastage, spiralling HS2 costs, and the Truss budget disaster…? Because otherwise your comments would not really be about wasted money, would they? What other reason might explain your comments ? I cant imagine myself.

Makes you wonder why the Irish still use the English names for most of their cities. Dublin, Cork, Limerick. The names of places is decided by the people who live in them not the tiny minority of fanatics .

No I would rather use the original name of the settlement. Be it Roman , Viking, Anglo Saxon, Welsh or English. Trying to give a place a new Politically Correct name to avoid offending a few Welsh Language fanatics is racists. The two National languages of Wales are English and Welsh. 99% of post on this site are in English. If Switzerland can have four National Languages there is no problem in Wales having two.

Politically correct? The place is in Wales so why can't it be known by its welsh name firstly?

Well if that were true then all of Wales would still be using the original welsh place names. Anyway i cant wait for our football team to be called Cymru by FIFA and UEFA. Its going to be as great a day as Joe Biden’s visit to Ireland. Johnson’s muscular unionism has all the muscular power of Jacon Rees-Mogg. How’s Brexit going by the way ? 🇮🇪ðŸ¤ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡º

Being Welsh and British I don't have any imperialist views. The UK is a democracy and the wishes of the majority should be respected and the wishes of small minorities should not be imposed on the majority. It is the Nationalistic jingoism from the minorities that is arrogance .

The small minorities are welsh and their country is wales and the language is welsh no matter how many people speak it. You do have a serious problem with people who are proud to be welsh and promote the language. I very rarely comment on things to do with wales as I do not live there anymore but when arrogant people spout their anti welsh bile I just can't help but stick up for it.
