| April 1st again? 07:37 - Apr 17 with 5108 views | SullutaCreturned | I just read that they're renaming the Brecon Beacons because "beacon" was a carbon burning signal and its incompatible with the drive for net zero. Surely it's a wind up? Beacons is a historical reference. It's not like it's offensive in any way and you can have electric beacons too. What next, rename Belisha's or not be allowed to be a "beacon of hope"? Crazy, stupid world. | | | | |
| April 1st again? on 07:51 - Apr 17 with 2439 views | AnotherJohn | From a marketing point of view replacing a name with high brand recognition with one that 80% of the UK population won't be able to pronounce or spell doesn't seem a great idea. Is the idea to conserve the area by reducing tourism? | | | |
| April 1st again? on 08:04 - Apr 17 with 2423 views | felixstowe_jack | Another own goal. 95% of Welsh people have always called in the Brecon Beacons. Do we now have to rename the town of Brecon as well. Another anti tourist measure designed to drive tourist away and increase unemployment. In the same page of the BBC headline owners of holiday business in Wales are already complaining the may have to close holiday business if they can't meet the Senedds arbitrary minimum of 182 days which is double the UK minimum. This can only lead to business closing down more job losses and another blow to the Welsh economy. Seems the Senedd ignored the results of their own consultation process and tourist department advice. | |

Most people in the north west know it as such and walk up it as such. Wales needs tourists to be made welcome not as interlopers .

What? It’s Penny Van isn’t it? Apparently named because the early visitors spent 1d to get transported to the top. That’s what I was told anyway.

I’d imagine there was a working group to come up with the idea & some marketing firm got paid a fair bit to come up with the new logo.

I agree, people of the present day will always call them the Beacons, but that's not really the point though, the people running the Beacons national parks are absolute idiots. Just ask anyone that has a business within the parks boundary, talk about nit picking to downright awkwardness, they are an absolute bunch of jobsworths that do more harm than good to the park, and then try to justify themselves with a little virtual signalling because that seems to be in vogue at the moment. Another nail in the coffin of Welsh tourism, may be a small nail, but a nail nevertheless.

| April 1st again? on 20:33 - Apr 17 with 1852 views | majorraglan | The name Bannau Brycheiniog predates the name Brecon Beacon by at least a couple of hundred years. I’m a fluent Welsh speaker and use the language in my every day life, in both professional and social settings. My first reaction on hearing this was one of surprise, the Beacons are relatively well know across the U.K. and given most people will continue to refer to the area as the Brecon Beacons I think it’s a bit of a pointless exercise. Maybe over 50plus years the term Brecon Beacons will disappear but it will take time and I doubt any of us will be around to see it. Name changing and reverting to indigenous names is something that’s been gathering momentum across the world for the last 30 odd years, Ayers Rock changed to Ayers Rock/ Uluru and it’s now changed again to Ulurur /Ayers Rock, in a few years its likely to change again to Uluru. Felix, Brecon already has a Welsh name and one which predates the name Brecon, - it’s Aberhonddu and it appears on quite a few road signs. | | | |

That's a sensible post in my opinion. Brecon is the anglicised version of Brycheiniog. I see the change as not needed and certainly not for the "net zero" reason given. There are more important things to spend money on.
