| This week in the Championship + Fixtures and current table on 20:22 - Apr 23 by vetchonian | Under Russ the wingbacks were the most advanced players we had no wide midfileders the pan was to pass the ball through the middle using the 3 defenders and two central midfielders with the advanced wingbacks "pushing" the opponents defence back whilst in realty most managers worked this out and flooded midfield and pressed us high up the pitch knowing we would then just pass it around our backline ........ As I say its all about opinions and it is obvious we all see the game in different ways which is why opinion is often divided on individual players but it is strange when people cant see changes in style and tactics i am full of praise for Martin for finally learning what does and deosnt work. Natchams goal was a delight but would never have happened previously as the midfield would have been congested and instructed to make short passes, just as previously the long ball played by Natcham for Cullens first attempt would not have happened. We scored three and created loads of opportunities far more than we did when playing MArtinball |
FFS we are still playing martinball sheesh 🙄

I use MArtinball as a reference to his preference you know 3 at the back no width playing through the middle and focus on pass count was the style pf play we saw Forest play agianst us last season the Cooperball many on her decried?

when we played Forest last season did they play Cooperball as we saw when he was here? No but Cooper was the manager despite playing a different way were Forest then playing Cooperball? Yes MArtin is still our manager but he is not playing MArtinball as labelled by many on here anymore

You don’t appear to properly understand the wing back concept. It’s not stopping you going at it hammer and tongs though fair play. 😂

He’s not. He’s being noted for changing things. What’s happening however is some are being realistic in noting this was clearly not the plan all along. I see no reason why people aren’t able to bring themselves to state that how he was doing things clearly wasn’t working, but since the long overdue changes (which are clearly demonstrable), things have improved. That’s not an insult to anyone.

Wing back play is still defensive width that is often isolated once in the attacking areas, hence why you see average player positions like we have done - as I demonstrated.

Martinball is synonymous with the old way of playing. The way he played the majority of the time in his almost 4 year career prior to this run. So when he says Martinball he refers to that, not this recently adapted style - more akin to what we have been calling for since 2021.

No it’s not. It’s also attacking width. This system is not new. It’s being referred to as “ Martinball “😂😂 John Toshack used this system very successfully over 40 years ago. To attack and to defend. Players like Ryan Manning have done well in the role. It’s not rocket science or reinvention of the wheel. Lay off the drugs.

Nope, it isn’t. The main duties of a wingback is defensive, hence why they are usually occupied by fullbacks. This system is new under Martin, simply a fact. Get with the conversation. The data says you are utterly wrong, but why change the habit of a lifetime.

Toshack encouraged attacking football not matches where we were trying to out pass the opposition as under the current manager comparing Martinball to what we saw under Tosh shows a naivety or lack of football understanding....or perhaps a selective memory. [Post edited 24 Apr 2023 8:32]

No comparison at all. Tosh’s team were not boring Imagine Robbie James running forward then stop and pass it sideways Quite ludicrous

With each post you demonstrate a lack of understanding My reference to Toshack was in relation to his preferred system at Swansea City which was to play with three centre backs and wing backs eg Hadziabbic and Robinson. Essentially these wide players were full backs by trade but with a licence to attack given the protection of playing with three centre backs. It’s a good attacking system but allows players to get behind the ball. And in numbers when needed. Your constant reference to “ Martinball “ is laughable and inaccurate. You’re using it in a critical way which is also unecessary. Try to look for positives. Life is more enjoyable that way. You just like to nitpick. It’s tedious and way wide of the actual reality anyway. By the way 19 points from 21. ðŸ‘ðŸ»âš½ï¸âš½ï¸âš½ï¸

Under Toshack Jimmy and Neil Robinson were not starting high up the pitch as Martin has set his wingbacks Tosh also played with wingers remember Leighton James? No need to lecture me on life thank you.... This is a football forum where we are all entitled to an opinion yes 19 points from 21 but everyone is forgetting the 17 from the previous 60. Long may this run of form continue

What is tedious is posters patronising others whom they believe are dim. Well, accept the fact others feel different . It’s like politicians in so much that many believe differently to others but accept democracy as it is. Now that means tolerance . And therein lies a mine field .

| This week in the Championship + Fixtures and current table on 11:46 - Apr 24 with 616 views | RichardO | Defensive systems 3 or 4 at the back, with wing backs 5 we have tried playing 3 at the back trying to create space in the by drawing players into the middle but last year the pace in the back meant as we progressed up the field we left ourselves open to the counter attack time and time again, we were predictable so teams could easily counter any threat, at times we had 5 at the back, 5 up front and an ocean of space in the middle, at times three players in wide positions more or less falling over each other to play a two yard being easy to close down, until we slowly shift the play to the other side of the park and have exactly the same even dragging the one forward out to the wing with possession but no-one in the danger area , the penalty box. to make that possession in any way dangerous. The only player in the back with pace that Martin would pick last year was Manning and he tends to be so focused in getting forward would defensively go AWOL, Downes was the only player with the pace and tenacity to cover him effectively. Defenders were definitely needed this season and gratefully accepted but in trying bed in the inexperienced defenders which we did seem to do, maybe Benda presence helped we were still predictable and all at sea on the left as Manning pushed on and on the right playing a wingback system with no viable wingbacks although Oko-Flex fitted the bill on the left but did he know he would have to cover Manning so much and was that why Martin was reluctant to use him. So given the extremely bad run that can only be laid down at the managers feet, things have seemingly changed going to a back four, Manning playing in a front three and then in a back four as needed, not predictable and effective. Will this run come to an end,of course but won't complain about the upturn. Next season if Martin gets Wingbacks will he revert to b a back three being predictable or will he have learnt from the last two seasons at this level? | | | |

“Martinball” doesn’t refer to simply a formation, it refers to a system.
