Already on its knees in recent years thanks to the Welsh Govts unnecessarily heavy Covid restrictions, refusal to deal with M4 congestion and seeming intention to actually make getting around in Wales even harder. To top that off we've still got the mooted tourist tax to come.

Is there anything in this country that they can't screw up?

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Aye upcoming "difficult decisions" that I guess will not in any way affect the proposed future increase of 36 extra politicians.

My intuition says no matter what financial situation Wales is facing at that particular moment in time there will indeed be money (Hey Presto!) found to pay for that.

This should be the first thing to go.

There also needs to be a major restructuring of local government and the number of councils needs reducing, but that’s a really difficult one as it would cost money ( a lot of money) to get trim the numbers at a senior level.

Apparently Starmer doesn't like Drakeford so things may not improve.

Drakers was just on the Welsh news, getting his excuses in early. he's saying difficult decisions will need to be made but will those decisions include cutting plans that really aren't needed, cut the white elephant that is CW airport to start with.

Wales will continue to do things differently apart from Drakeford who is doing a Nadine Dorries, they both said they'd step down. We're still waiting.

Good news for Wales Drakeford has announced he is stepping down unfortunately he has said sometime before the next election due in 2026. Only another three years to drag down the Welsh economy.

I haven't got a massive issue with WG ownership of CWL airport but rather the way it's being run and other problems caused by WG legislation to it's operation.

A busy airport will reap financial rewards to the Welsh tourist industry.

Unfortunately it's difficult to get to to anyone coming over the border via the Brynglas tunnels because they risk missing their flight in a traffic jam. Drakeford's moratorium on road building means a new M4 link road can't be built (and most road building is now illegal), most roads in the area will soon have a 20mph speed limit, there has been no progress on a rail link west of Bridgend and of course actually asking Europe's largest airline not to operate perfectly legal flights in the rest of the UK from Cardiff towards the end of Covid restrictions.

It should be run to make a profit not as a Quango, unfortunately that is completely opposed to Drakeford's politics, so we throw bucket fulls of money at it.

As things stand it's not financially viable, many political decisions aren't, from Welsh Language policies to sending Refugees to Rwanda. All politicians are the same and most are self-serving and useless.

I've said before I'd like to see compulsory voting and PR at least politicians would then directly represent the entire population.

Good post.

I’m generally pro WG, but I think some of the policies of the current government are poor. It’s the same in Westminster, I think we’re being led by governments that are shambolic on numerous fronts.

Drakers is standing down before the next WG election, as far as I’m concerned he needs to sling his hook now.

Wales as a global tourist destination – Report Summary

Summary
Tourism makes a significant contribution to the Welsh economy, providing employment for around 12% of the Welsh workforce. However, Wales significantly underperforms in attracting international visitors in comparison to the rest of the UK. In 2019, the UK received 41 million international visitors, who spent a total of £28.4 billion. However, only 1.02 million international tourists visited Wales, spending £514.6 million—2% of the total UK spend—while 3.46 million international tourists visited Scotland.

Throughout our inquiry, we identified several key themes and issues that will need to be rectified if Wales is to take a greater share of the tourism market in the UK. Our Report therefore makes the following conclusions and recommendations:

Welsh brand
Wales has a low profile overseas and attracts a small proportion of the international visitors coming to the UK. There is a lack of awareness of Wales’ strengths as a holiday destination. Wales lacks a coherent brand for the overseas market. Marketing of Wales must be stronger, with a clear theme devised to attract international tourists based on Wales’ unique strengths and attractions.

We recommend that VisitBritain and Visit Wales work together to develop a strategy, by February 2024, for promoting Wales as a first-choice destination for international visitors to the UK. A key aspect of this should be the development of a distinctive brand that raises awareness of Wales that can be used consistently to help market Wales and to raise awareness of its location as a holiday destination.

Role of VisitBritain
It is important that UK Government bodies responsible for promoting Wales abroad reflect the distinct identity of each part of the UK in their activities. We are not convinced that VisitBritain is achieving all it can on behalf of Wales. We heard criticism of the UK Government’s GREAT campaign in promoting Wales. We remain to be convinced that Wales has benefited from the campaign. VisitBritain should make improvements to better reflect Wales as a distinct location, and report to us on progress made by February 2024.

Holiday packages
Wales is often not included in UK holiday packages offered by tour operators. When developing a joint strategy to promote Wales as a distinct destination, we recommend that VisitBritain and Visit Wales encourage tour operators to include Wales in UK holiday packages. We expect VisitBritain to report its progress on this issue by February 2024.

Website
VisitBritain does not sufficiently promote Wales in its marketing materials, nor does it make a focused offering to international tourists of Wales’ attractions. We recommend that VisitBritain improves its website to better market Wales overseas. We expect VisitBritain to report to us on its progress by February 2024.

Transport infrastructure
We are concerned that poor transport infrastructure has a negative impact on Wales’ ability to attract a greater share of international tourists who arrive into the UK. Transport infrastructure has been underfunded by the UK and Welsh Governments for a number of years. Transport infrastructure spending must be regarded with higher priority.

We call on the UK Government and the Welsh Government to recognise the importance of transport to the tourism industry. We urge the UK Government and the Welsh Government to bring forward proposals to address these issues, focused on the potential positive impact on tourism. The UK Government and Welsh Government must look creatively at ways to fund transport infrastructure projects.

Response from the Welsh Government
Written Statement: Wales as a global tourist destination - Welsh Affairs Committee report, July 2023

I wanted to take this opportunity to respond to some of the points raised in the Welsh Affairs Committee report Wales As A Global Tourist Destination (external link), this week.

Launched in February 2022, the inquiry received 15 submissions of written evidence and held five oral evidence hearings, taking evidence from organisations and representatives from the visitor economy sector and, in its final session, Ministers from the Welsh and UK Governments.

The report made a number of positive points, including about Visit Wales’ work; co-working between Visit Wales and VisitBritain and industry relationships and engagement.

This report includes a focuses on how VisitBritain markets Wales internationally and makes a series of comments and observations:

VisitBritain lacks the knowledge and expertise to successfully promote Wales, and is not achieving all it can on behalf of Wales.

It is important UK Government bodies responsible for promoting Wales abroad reflect the distinct identity of each part of the UK in their activities.
The committee recommends VisitBritain improves its website to better market Wales overseas.
The committee has asked VisitBritain to report on its progress by February 2024. Visit Wales will be updated on progress in these areas in the interim.

The evidence used to inform this report dates to early spring of 2022, as tourist destinations around the world – and in Wales – were recovering from the pandemic. Our work post-pandemic has been focused on supporting the sector to restore and grow international markets. In 2019, there were 1.02m international visits to Wales, with a spend of around £515m and with visitors staying, on average, four to seven nights. Domestic visitors have always played a very important role in the Welsh visitor economy – in 2019, there were 10.7m overnight visitors from across Great Britain to Wales, spending around £2bn, staying on average 3.5 nights.

I was pleased the committee’s report highlighted the UK Government’s failure to designate HS2 as an England-only project, which would have meant that people in Wales would have benefitted from some £5bn in additional funding.

The committee also explored Visit Wales as part of the Welsh Government. This enables Visit Wales to make connections across international relations, housing and climate change in creating tourism for good. I do not see that creating an external body would bring any significant benefit to the sector.

In relation to branding, the award-winning Cymru Wales brand has been in place since 2016 and its strength was endorsed this week in an independent report on Wales’ activity at the FIFA World Cup 22. The Cymru Wales brand is based on our strong cultural and national identity; the landscapes of our exceptional built and natural environment and our acknowledged adventure offer.

We continue to work on proposals which will give local authorities powers to introduce a visitor levy in their local area. This will generate revenue to support investment in the tourism industry. Our research shows that the idea of a levy – which is commonplace in holiday destinations around the world – is popular with people in Wales, especially those living in tourist hotspots.

Introducing a visitor levy is a Programme for Government commitment and the work is being carried out in collaboration with Plaid Cymru as part of the Co-operation Agreement.

In my opinion the Welsh affairs committee responded to the points they wanted and ignored the points they didn't want to reply.

Thanks for posting, it made an interesting read. Clearly WG have some responsibility, but there are also issues at a national level. The HS2 business is an outrage.

I’d like to see Wales develop something like the Scots have done with the NC500, they could develop a Wales based route incorporating the best bits of Welsh tourism and people could pick and choose what they wanted to enjoy.

It’s not just wales that’s going to have budgetary issues and shortfalls, the UK Govt departments are going to cop it too.
Inflation is pushing up prices and settlements aren’t keeping pace with it. Uk public services face cuts of £23bn over the next few years, there’s going to be plenty of black holes.
