Three Welsh Rugby ‘Codebreakers' Immortalised by Statue in Cardiff Bay ... 09:31 - Jul 20 with 727 viewstheloneranger

Not before time ...

"A Welsh rugby veteran has described seeing a statue of him and two fellow players being unveiled in his home city of Cardiff as among the “highlights of my life”.

Billy Boston, who celebrates his 89th birthday next month, was in the Welsh capital to see himself, Clive Sullivan and Gus Risman – three of rugby’s “codebreakers” – honoured on Wednesday."

As has been said these three along with several other welshmen are legends in the North.

Met big Billy a few times in the late 80s and early 90s, I was star struck but he talked to me like a mate, an absolute gentleman.

Totally deserved statue in cardiff but about 30 years too late.

All of those great players were on the receiving end of rampant racism by the WRU
Some our own greatest have gone north and we're then ostracised
Read what Dai Watkins put up with
RL a great game as is RU

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

I was looking at my Facebook page earlier tonight and there was a picture of Jim Mills, Gareth Edwards and Mike Nicholas posing for a picture at the unveiling of the statue. I’m too young to remember Mills, but I remember Edwards playing and I also remember Mike Nicholas, he was a tough as teak type who played up in Warrington after going North in the 60’s. I can remember meeting him back in the 70’s, platform shoes and all the gear, he cut quite a figure.
My old man’s cousin John Collins went North after getting 10 caps back in the 50’s, he was hell of a nice guy.

The players who went North received very shoddy treatment, lots of Union players who weren’t at the favoured clubs also didn’t get what they deserved.

Jim Mills was involved in Clubs in Widnes, the safest place to have a night out.
I follow him on Twitter .
Real character
I was in Swansea when he accidentally tripped over that french player

A good idea of what it was like for those who went north can be gleaned from reading David Watkins. Autobiography . Truly a great player on both codes .
