Labour win one
Lib Dems win one
Conservatives hold one

So who is it a good result for?

I’d say it’s a good result for Labour and the Lib Dems because of that kind of swing was repeated at a GE tomorrow the Conservatives would get a kicking. The Uxbridge campaign was fought primarily on 1 issue which is ULEZ, the Conservatives did their home work and have given Khan a bloody nose. Unless Khan is thick as mince, with less than 10 months to the next London Mayor election he needs to look at the policy or he’ll get a kicking from the voters. I wouldn’t mind betting that Starmer and the power brokers will now get involved and we’ll see ULEZ take more of a back seat.

I think that’s pretty much spot on.

I think there is a slight warning for Starmer that continuing to play so safe up to the election could be a risk.

I appreciate the economy is in bits but I’d like to see Labour hang their hat on at least one policy change (given the choice I’d have them reverse the two child benefit cap).

For me the best thing to come out of last night was hate-peddler Laurence Fox losing his deposit. Well done Uxbridge voters 👏

I think you are right about Fox, I don’t like the cut of his jib.

Can’t say I agree with your comment in relation to the 2 child limit on child benefit, it’s been in place a while and people who have had more than 2 kids since it’s introduction knew the score in advance.
During my time I’ve seen plenty of people having kids just to being able to access benefits and I think setting limits to what we’ll pay out is fair. I accept that some families are struggling and would welcome additional funding to prevent kids going hungry etc. To support families we could look at breakfast clubs, free school meals and providing those children in need with a packed meal to take home after school. I’m more than happy to commit resources to support those in need, but would want to ensure the kids get it and that the money isn’t spent on fags and booze.

My observations speaking as someone with no party allegiance and has voted for all the parties at one time or another over my 50 plus years of voting/non voting.

Conservatives are where they are and we all know they will be well beaten in the next general election and were lucky to hold a seat last night. It's just a case of damage limitation between now and then. I don't think the majority of floating voters dislike Sunak so there is no issue there and they are probably hoping for lower inflation to help them next year. Nearly 18 months is a long time in politics.

Labour would have expected to have done better last night they actually had a 10% drop in votes in Somerton and Frome. Outside the party faithful Starmer is not as popular as the members think. They really need to get their policies out there soon if the want to maintain the momentum they had. Yes they will have the majority of seats at the next general election but it won't be the landslide people were expecting a year ago.

Lib Dems had a good result last night but they have a history of doing well in the West Country. I think in the General election they will pick up a massive amount of protest votes from people who voted Conservative last time but will not vote Labour. But to do this they really need to lift their profile, if you asked 100 people in the street the majority would not be able to name their party leader.

So to sum up. In the next General election, Labour most seats, Conservative second, Lib Dems third. No overall majority hung parliament.

I predict Labour wins with a majority and five years later things are just about the same.
As for the Tories, there are the most pitiful ,least self aware jerks I can remember .
They are dying on the vine and they cannot see it.

Wale# will vote Labour in the main whatever

The ULEZ is more than climate change, it’s also meant to address things like vehicle pollution which impacted on the residents health and well-being and allegedly increases the risk of early death etc. Petrol cars which are up to around 15 to 17 years old are ok and not effected, it generally tends to impact on diesel engines which are over 7 years old and not Euro 6 compliant. Given that it’s going to impact on older cars, it’s more likely to affect those who are less well off and don’t have the cash to splash out on a new motor. I appreciate my last statement is a bit of a generalisation, but the people with dosh generally tend to have newer cars.

Respectfully disagree.

Those who have multiple children for the benefits will access from different pots. Those who really get hit by the cap are the squeezed middle.

Child benefit is really neatly targeted unlike many other benefits (unlike universal free school meals). It also with its relativly generous cap gives middle income families who get nothing else some skin in the tax game.

We've also got a declining population so I'm not sure capping birthrate in this way is particularly helpful, partiularly as the jobs market needs workers.

Sadly there'll always be some who work the system but that's the price you pay for any welfare state.

A hung parliament is the last thing this country needs IMO.

If and when Labour win the next election I hope they have a good majority, so they can push through their policies (if they have any), but when things go tits up they'll just blame the last conservative government for everything (bit like Drakeford does).

I have an older diesel, which passes it's emission test yearly. I'm not going to upgrade it because of the cost and it's still running well.Incidentally, we are no longer in the EU,. Diesel engines in many way are less harmful, as diesel doesn't contain benzene which is carcinogenic. I'm not sure how older cars can be deemed a health risk if they pass the emission tests, This will be a vote loser for any party that implements this

You would if you lived near to and had to use the car to visit a ULEZ. Emissions tests are graded according to the age of the car, older cars have more generous allowances.
We’ve got 2 diesels, one is 14 years old with 53000 on the clock and runs like a dream but it isn’t Euro6 compliant, the other one is much newer and is. Taking the older car in to Bristol, Birmingham or any other place where there’s a ULEZ is going to cost me. People who have camper vans/motor homes are in the same boat - if they want to venture to Bristol it’s a mare.

The zone in Bristol takes into the route to Bristol airport. There's only one reason for that and it's revenue gathering

I'm diesel to. Next holiday we need to stay in Bristol as we have an early flight. Will not be staying into the centre as it will cost me £18. Will be venturing a little further south to book our accommodation. Went through all the quaint villages last time to avoid the clean air tax

Of course they should have. The incumbents resigned in disgrace. The sitting government is pretty much as low as it’s ever been they are in absolute free fall with the country in the worst state for decades.

Labour are hoping to coast in without having to do anything or offer any viable alternative. They are hoping to win an election on the sheer fact that they aren’t the tories. If they had really attacked this they would have won all three seats comfortably. The tories are on their arse and nobody is taking advantage.

Any policy would be welcome. There’s only two reasons a party wouldn’t be shouting their policies from the roof top:

1) They can’t agree on any.

B) They know they’ll be unpopular policies.

There is no way that kier will set out policies now, he is going to wait until the election has been announced, he will have a great big long list of the sh!te that tories have inflicted on the country to remind us what an absolute shower of uncaring lot the are.

Trouble is most media outlets won't print them so labour will have to box clever to get this out to the country.
