Swansea City v Bristol Rovers : Pre Season Friendly 23:44 - Jul 23 with 6735 viewsModeratorC

Bristol’s second team visit the Swansea.Com Stadium for a fiery friendly as the troops of tomorrow face the pirates who are not from Penzance. The real top wurzels who venture out only to have a McDonald’s at Ashton Gate are coming. And they be cider’d up n’ all.

Swansea City v Bristol Rovers : Pre Season Friendly on 01:07 - Jul 26 by sw02sea

Never mind waiting for a LWB.
We need to go to a flat back 4, to stop the acres of space where WB’s should be operating in.
It was like a Martin Groundhog day.
We lost to the better team on the night, which is slightly worrying even at this early stage.
Jeez, that’s something I thought I’d never say, for a team managed by Bart Simpson.
They played it out from the back with ease, what happened to MD’s high energy, high press?
How many shots did their keeper have to make?
More questions than answers.
Never mind, no need to worry, they’re pre season friendlies innit.

Having slept on it I think last night, despite the overall performance and result, could have some positives.
1) we have a few bench warmers who could be useful cover as long as they are paired with senior players.
2) Abdulai. A right sided midfield player did well as a left wing back. I would have liked to have seen him in his usual position
3) when we kept possession we looked in control but the very high press congests the opposition half giving less room to operate.
4) it should have shown Duff which fringe players are in need of a loan away.

The injury situation is a concern. With a fit Walsh, Allen, Ginnelly and Cabango together with Fulton, Piroe and (depending on formation) Darling starting we are a completely different team.

What are the thoughts on Key?
Started busy but faded completely imo.

Poll: Should the summer transfer window close before the season starts?

Only seen the highlights and read the comments, it would appear same old mistakes being made, playing tactics that the manager thinks will work and not tactics to suit the resources he has.
Won't go back as far as the Premiership decline but Potter opened up play and introduced some youngsters we scored goals but leaked them in similar ways and was our defensive set up at corners was abysmal.
Cooper saw very early we couldn't afford to open the game up and sorted the defensive play by keeping us very compact less goals conceded but less goals scored.
Martin again tried to open up play but similar to Potter conceded goals for fun, the defense even bolstered by two new needed young and inexperienced at this level centre halves but only by going to four at the back four and with good quality, robust and hardworking midfielders reduced the glut of goals conceded.
We have to make sure to basic elements of defensive play has to be right across the team.
Duff will have to work out the best way for whatever squad he has to ensure this defensive set up is solid, early days yet but Cooper knew and Martin(eventually) realised you have to ensure the defensive set up is right before you can press forward to win games.

A word of praise for the Bristol goalkeeper … several excellent saves.
Fisher, too, was OK.

Yes, credit where it’s due but in Fisher’s case, he has a lot to do for me at least to have any confidence in him. He’ll have the odd good game but consistency isn’t his forte.

Totally agree with 4 at back with3 in middle 2 wide men and q up top, always was successful with martinet Rodgers and Laudrup,, the full backs can get forward and support wingers always been our best formation, where we can switch quickly on counter attack..

Early days for new manager, needs to work his best team and setup and work out how to adapt using his squad member.
If you look at last seasons most championship teams struggled to have two good halves of football being unable adapt to opposition's changes, given the number of substitutions available it became a bit of a game of chess to get a result , Martin got a nice run in the end by good adaption or benefitting on other teams with nothing to play for trying to blood some youngsters?
Early days for manager yet but in the end has to use the players at his disposal and get on with it.

We had the 3rd best defensive record from open play in the division under Potter. It's a testament to how bad the set pieces were that people seem to have forgotten that. Cooper improved the set piece defending dramatically but we were actually slightly leakier otherwise.

Maybe under Cooper we invited teams to attack us by dropping so deep. You do surprise a little bit re Potter's open play defensive stats but couldn't forget how bad the we were at set piece might have clouded things.

Twentyman's father, Geoff Snr, was one of Tosh's secret weapons - being one of Liverpool's top scouts.
