Alan Sheehan : Is coaching & management of players catching up with him ? 20th Oct 2025 08:00
Swansea City players return to Fairwood this morning with much to digest after their weekend performance against Southampton. Despite earning a point, on any other given day they would have lost that fixture. It was more about Southampton and their poor finishing than a solid defensive performance. 0

Won’t be a popular suggestion, because some people think it’s negative and Russell Martin poisoned people against three at the back, but I think this squad is made for 532, especially when Santos is fit to cover.

Casey looks assured and capable every time he plays. It would suit both fullbacks (and both cover fullbacks) down to the ground.

Galbraith and Franco with either Stamenic or Yalcouye and someone with a free role between midfield and attack to support Vipotnik (especially in games like Saturdays when he can’t get into it on his own). Whether that’s Cullen, Eom, Widdell or Wales, I don’t know.

Won’t happen because Sheehan likes every attack to go down the wings, but it’s predictable and hasn’t worked the last two games. Plus we were very lucky at Blackburn

Excellent analysis again from a great team
This over cautious slow unambitious football will come back and bite Sheehan,we look more like the Luke Williams coached side than the exciting attacking side we were when Sheehan was caretaker, indeed it was that style that got him the permanent job
We did have 2 different coaches back then who have since gone and I wonder how much of this regression is due to O’Dea‘s coaching as much as Sheehan’s over cautious approach
We were awful against Southampton,in fact watch the highlights on tv and the Swans site all you see is Southampton constantly attacking , nothing of the Swans ,it is truly embarrassing,Sheehan’s comments that we saw a different side to our game are ludicrous,it was one way football, backs to the wall desperate and lucky defending and it can’t be allowed to continue ,we have a better squad than last season yet they are being made to look toothless by bad tactics and management
Something has to change and soon

I agree with your suggestion. A really good team can go from one formation to another just to be unpredictable. Casey could be that player who moves to a def MF when switching to a back four during a game. I would suggest that Galbraith or Yalcouye be the MF who is given license to roam and support both Vip and the midfield.

With a ‘spare’ centre back, which I agree could be Casey, given how composed he is on the ball, it gives us a lot more freedom in midfield. Naughton used to do it very well.

It means the wingbacks are covering the line themselves of course, but they’d have less gap between them and a centre back and it would make us much stronger through the middle, where we create next to nothing at the moment.

I’d stil like Galbraith pulling the strings further back. We could stick an attacking player in behind Vipotnik. Inoussa?

I agree it may suit Yalcouye as it gives him licence to steal the ball higher up the pitch without the threat of losing it in dangerous positions, which I think is the reason he’s not starting ganes now.

I don't know how much fault lies with the coaches, Sheehan and/or O'Dea. I will say that Sheehan and his coaches still haven't figured out who to start, sub, and what's their best formation. Sometimes, it takes awhile before players figure out how to play with each other, to know what each other's tendencies are. I really like Yalcouye & Galbraith being on the field at the same time, along with either Franco or Stamenic. And, I really like the idea of playing a 3-5-2 with Casey playing with Ben & Burgess.

If a 3-5-2 were the formation, then you could utilize an Ishe or Manuel or both as subs, and play Ronald or Eom or Cullen or Widell or Wales behind Vip or Idah.

Vig GK, Ben, Burgess, Casey, Key (RWB), Tymon (LWB), Franco, Galbraith, Yalcouye, Ronald, Vip.
