Different immigrant. He should definitely have been deported but then if you look at the Caerphilly bi-election which Reform ran pretty much on an anti-immigrant platform, 2.9% of the town’s population are immigrants whereas the figure rises to around 40% when you look at the number of NHS consultants in the town.

NHS consultants don't arrive on small boats throwing their documentation away before hand , thats the difference and that for some reason is often ignored when people discuss illegal and legal migration .

That is true and reflects our present situation. However, as I think we've debated in the past things did not have to be that way. There has never been a shortage of well-qualified UK applicants for medical school, just a cap on number of student places and not enough investment in new medical schools. Amazingly, there was a notorious vote at the 2008 BMA annual conference where delegates voted both to restrict student places and oppose the opening of any new medical schools. https://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a748 Nor is the present policy easy to justify on moral grounds, as it lures away doctors that developing countries have paid to train. Nigeria in particular has suffered. IN 2020 there were about 74,543 doctors on the register of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria but only about half of these were still practicing in the country. The exodus of doctors has resulted in widespread "dual practice" where public sector doctors run parallel private practices and often push patients who can afford it to jump the queue by switching over. This leaves many poorer patients without proper care. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8439958/ https://www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/research-reveals-nhs-overreliance-on- I'd say the ethically-responsible position is not to praise immigrant doctors from WHO "red list" countries for coming here, but to train our own in sufficient numbers. Some people may return to arguments about pay and say that Australia and other English language destinations will lure our graduates away, but with increased supply and only a limited number of such high-paying overseas positions, I'd say we will overcome that problem.

I absolutely agree with all of that 👏 I wish we could always talk about the issues we face with the nuance they deserve. I get accused on here of being overly sympathetic to immigrants but I’m as keen to deal with the blindingly obviously problems brought by both illegal and legal immigrants as most posters on here. I just think it’s dangerous (and simplistic) to blame that one group for everything.
