Pretty much every historian of repute out there would say it was the flashpoint that catalysed the tension into actual conflict.
Fact remains that history teaches us that the violent removal of political rivals nearly always results in either a war or a worse situation than existed before. The murder of Prince Arthur of Brittany by King Johns own hand led to the barons war and the loss of the Angevin Empire. The murder of Richard II by Henry Bolingbroke caused the wars of the roses. The political decision to try and execute Charles I led to the tyranny of Cromwell during the interregnum. I could go on and on and on the list is endless but it pretty much always causes factionalism as various groups compete to fill the vacuum, along with widespread resent and the desire for revenge.

Ukraine took back an area the size of Scotland. Kherson Lyman Izyum. Russia will need another two years to take back Lyman for the s cond time costing them around 500,000 men KIA or injured.
