Look at this list of bands that played at smallish venues.
I was a regular at the Kursaal Southend around this time. Along with the bands on that list Roxy Music, Genesis, Family , Focus, SAHB etc. etc.
How lucky we were no dynamic pricing, fortunes for tickets, buying a year in advance, just rock up on a Saturday evening after watching the Rangers best ever team.

I'll readily admit Ted, I loved Pretty Vacant.
Ps Ted….what a great idea for a new thread when there's a gap in games. The 8 Desert Island Discs thread.
Anyone wanna start it ?

Tell you what, Colin, if Desert Island Discs was just someone listing their top 8 it would be pretty cr*p; what makes it great is when they explain why these 8 songs tell you something about their life or why the song matters to them.
Now I reckon you could get a great, great, thread out of that, plenty people on here have done all sorts.

The ultimate gig for this thread has to be the gig in your living room which John Otway performed. I think he's now done that more than once, actually, each time as a competition prize.
Oh, and I have a vague recollection of having seen glam rockers Wrathchid play a gig in the sports hall at Newbury Leisure Centre. There were some pyrotechnics too, rather risky in a venue with a wooden floor .
"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

There was a lovely programme recently about the day Bob Marley and Johnny Nash came down to Peckham Manor School in 1972 and played for the school kids in the sports hall.
Edit to say that a Citeh mate, who’s into free jazz and electronica, had improvising saxophonist Lol Coxhill perform in his front room once. Just phoned him up and Lol was happy to oblige. Bed and breakfast thrown in too!

The Windsor Castle in Harrow Rd, opposite Chippenham Rd?
Used to ride past it every day 10-12 years ago and wonder just how long it could possibly remain derelict. Went past Monday and got my answer - there are now three large windows on the ground floor and people on their laptops. Couldn't figure out if it was a bar or an office, probably the latter.
When did the gigs stop? Lived in that area 85-95 and there were definitely none then.

Also, for those who haven't visited the area for a while, the aforementioned Red Cow, is now a pretty good Fullers pub called Latymers.
AC/DC tribute act Hells Bells appearing there on 23rd April according to the website. Apparently it’s the 50th anniversary of the original band’s Red Cow appearance (I think BostonR said he was there). Hells Bells tribute act scheduled for 2076 then.

I wiki'd - seems to have shut down in 2009. Honestly, I couldn't tell ya, but, I'm pretty sure there was live music in the early 80's, after that, I went to face the music in the USA.
People occasionally wondered how the Windsor Castle stayed open, what with a fight every night (some brutal), and after hours drinking the norm as, (for those not familiar with that part of town) the Harrow Rd Cop Shop was virtually next door. Well, once a week, someone that resembled me, would collect a brown envelope from Vincent (the guv'nor), stroll down to the Police Station and hand it over to the officer at the desk, with a barely audible whisper - from the Windsor, allegedly. Hard to believe that area is actually Maida Vale.
BTW - it was the London pub for the Windsor Hells Angels, though they only popped in now and then. They had a band of local street urchins that called themselves 'The Five Pliers' who did a lot of the nasty wet work.

I lived on Chippenham Road (in the infamous tower block, Hermes Point) 86-90, so the Windsor Castle was my local. However I rarely visited it, because it was a pound-in-the-pot for strippers shithole by then. No live bands, sadly. It was on the way down then, and continued to decline until it was bought by property developers....
So many pubs in that area were allowed to decline and die: The Chippenham, The Skiddaw, The Elephant and Castle, The Neeld Arms, The Prince Albert, The Shirland Hotel, the Devonshire Castle.... all gone....

The Chippenham. A real spit and sawdust pub as I remember it in the early 70s. I say remember it, but I was usually blotto on all sorts when in there.

the windsor chapter were regulars every wednesday night in the north pole when johnny fredericks ran it.....back in the late 70's early 80's.
the group flying fox, with nick simper out of deep purple, used to attract them.

I’ve seen Otway loads of times including in pubs: a classic English eccentric and a great fella.
This is a lovely thread: makes me feel quite young!

Interesting - let me guess, the aforementioned 'urchins' who were their tag-a- longs upset the regular drinkers?
The list of sadly demised establishments - remember The Bricklayers? Turn Left out the front door of The Windsor Castle, then first left, sharp right and there she was. Fine old school boozer, hidden away, just a two-minute walk when we wanted to escape the noise.
Edit - I have just been sent a text informing me that The Bricklayers still exists, nowadays called Angie's Free House. Textor, says I'd enjoy the place "still has character". Another destination evening on my next visit.
