| EU nationals with British passports 22:18 - Feb 16 with 1243 views | Beethoven | Reading a recent post on how Swansea have several young Polish men in our academy it got me thinking that there must be hundreds of young footballers in the U.K who are originally from the E.U, reading the rules listed below any of these men can represent any of the home countries. I know it is nice to give Welsh youngsters the chance however Wales would benefit from a larger pool of players to select from. I think Wales should start making a list of all young E.U born nationals who are on the books of U.K clubs and maybe start looking at them for the Wales youth setup. There might be an absolute gem out there waiting to be discovered. EU nationals raised in the UK can represent a British national team (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) if they meet FIFA eligibility criteria, which generally requires five years of education or residency before age 18, or holding citizenship. Post-Brexit, they face strict Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) rules to play professionally. Key Eligibility Rules for Playing for UK Nations Education/Residency Rule: A player can represent a UK nation if they have lived in that territory for at least five years after reaching the age of 10, or for at least three years if they began living there before age 10. Citizenship: If the EU national has acquired British citizenship, they are eligible to represent a home nation. Previous Caps: If they have already played for another country at the senior level in an official competition, they cannot switch, though exceptions exist for those with dual nationality. FIFA Eligibility: Under FIFA's rules, players without a parent or grandparent born in the UK can represent a British team if they meet these long-term residence requirements. | | | | |

I'm genuinely confused as to why the link I posted has had such a negative effect .The story is about a lad from Cardiff ,born and raised there until he was about 6 who was scouted by Barcelona ,moved there with his family ,made his mark out in Spain and is now refused citizenship by this country .???

I’m sure he can answer for himself but all I got from his post was how ridiculous the system is not enabling a British born person to get a passport. I didn’t notice any p1ss taking in there but maybe Boundy will set us straight. 🤷

Exactly how the post was meant to come across , I could have added so much more but out of respect to the family didn't . One of my family is still in touch with them as his son started playing football with his son before he left for Spain.

| EU nationals with British passports on 19:10 - Feb 17 with 550 views | Dr_Winston | In common with many other countries including France and Germany, UK Birthright citizenship has not been a thing since the early 80's. It depends on whether at least one parent is a citizen. If neither are, then it's wide open to things like settled status, EU residence etc. A child who, although born in the UK hasn't lived here in over a Decade is not automatically entitled to a passport no matter how good a footballer he is. Which is as it should be. | |

Cheers Doc I wasn't aware of the minefield of claiming a passport. He is a very talented player and definitely born in the UK which makes it more laughable when you see others with duel passports who cannot be returned to the other country when they commit crimes here.

I didn’t misunderstand it Boundy in the context of the conversation. Saw nothing wrong with it, hence my reply. Displays how things can get misunderstood on forums. Apologies of it came across in that way.

He clealry took what Boundy stated out of context. Move on. The purpose of this site is to raise awareness of the brain tumour charity and if people can be bothered to read the features they can click on the link at the foot of them and potentially save their life or that of family and friends. It works.
