I can understand your liking for wind ......

Wind around 50% of UK electricity energy today and for the last month. Some massive battery factories in ndet construction by Tata and others. No exporting acid rain to Scandinavia..

https://www.energydashboard.co

It check this every day and most days are windy.

Welsh natural resources profits have historically left Wales for London.

Wood copper coal Slate Water now wind. Crown estates making huge profits registered in London and some handed to the King and central Government.

They say The King will use his £50m pay rise to renovate his mansions. None in Wales

Yeah France has been pretty much fully nuclear for decades, is completely carbon neutral and can sell excess energy to its neighbours.

We are so behind the curve on so many things largely because of the dogmatic ideology of complete morons.

We should not have allowed our nuclear plants to be decommissioned. Or privatised our energy companies

Nuclear in this country suffers from the same problem as basically every other major infrastructure project. Too much attention paid to minor factors and pressure groups. Drives up the cost and time required to do anything, to an absurd degree.

South Korea planned and built two reactors in twelve years. The licence for Hinckley Point C was granted in November 2012 and if we're lucky it'll be up and running by 2030.

It's insane.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

It's mainly due to legislation. And the private companies trying to maximise profit / minimalise cost by trying to dodge their legal responsibilities rather than address them up front.

Hinkley point is adjacent to and discharges in to the Severn Estuary Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area and Ramsar site. Amongst other designated sites in the immediate area. That's as protected as you can get - perhaps it's not the best place for it?

Perfect example of the kind of mindset that created this situation.

As in you see no problem in spending years and billions extra on projects just because some fish/bats/voles might be inconvenienced. Thousands of birds die each year getting chopped up by wind turbines. No objections get raised to that.

In any case, allied to recent news about proposed deals for SMR, even the BBC has woken up to the fact that the mad dash for renewable energy might have been a mistake...

It's legislation, sometimes it's way OTT but it's generally there for a reason. It's not just some bats, voles and fish, it's the most ecologically significant. In reality it's only those that delay projects and cost money. Few would care if a flounder got minced by a nuclear cooling intake but plenty would care if it was one of the last populations of Atlantic salmom on their way to breed, few care if a flock of magpies got chopped up by a turbine but plenty would if it was a white tailed eagle . And it only results in delays and extra costs because the developers and their consultants try to minimise what they're spending, maximise profit and deny there are any problems. They get called out every time.

In reality a small change early in the proces could alleviate any problems, a famous exampe is the HS2 bat tunnel, it was decided to run the track directly through a wood where rare bats bred, legislation meant they had to be protected so HS2 spend £100 million on a tunnel that was way OTT, but they could have just re-routed the track. Unfortuantly this wasn't possible as they'd already bought the wood, and didn't undertake an environmental assessment beforehand.

If you try to build a nuclear power station in one of the most protected and unique areas in the world there are environmental issues to overcome. Although as I understand the delays are the result of finance and the pandemic. The main issues I see are too many people involved in projects, and awful project management - if most infrastructre was built or project managed by the state rather than 100's of individual companies on a sub contract, using finance from abroad there will be problems. It should be undertaken by nationalised companies.

NIMBYS hold very little sway in planning decisions and that's correct, if they did nothing would get built. Kilvey Skyline project is a case in point.

I agree with a lot of that article - I'm no fan of Millibands approach, or that of previous governments but we have to aim for renewable energy generation, away from dependency on gas and ultimately it's only investing in infrastructre.

Where are the spent nuclear rods going to be stored Doc. I mean permanent storage .

It will cost billions but we are kicking the can down the road because there is no lint term plan. It is the same mining culture. No plan for the clean up. Stuck the coal slag heaps anywhere you can and hope for the best.
