Well net zero is true to its word , zero fuel security ,zero hope and now zero job opportunities .Why is this Governmemt hell bent on destroying our economy and country.
Anyone on the left care to comment ?

Countries in the middle east and elsewhere are blowing each other up, setting fire to refineries ammo dumps and the like, and we are concerned about net zero

I don't think anyone thinks that's a good idea either. Small, hopefully temporary problem in the grand scheme of things too.

Looks like there could be a new nuclear power station is on the way to Anglesey which would be great news. We need to get all the planning etc sorted asap and hopefully Rolls Royce can then bring it in on budget and on time.

3 SMR's can power 3 million homes. That means 30 of them dotted around the UK could meet all our household needs entirely. 40-50 would cover everything, with plenty to spare. Cheap energy for everyone.

Why are we wasting our time with windmills?

They aren't without significant political and environmental risk. Although they do have a place.

It's very much in it's infancy, but osmotic generation could be perfectly place to meet Wales needs. It uses the different densities of Salt and fresh water to drive turbines.

The environmental risk is tiny, as previously discussed. The political risk shouldn't be a factor, but with Governments as weak as they have been for decades I'll grant you that one.

Once you get down to it however, the simple, inescapable reality is that Nuclear is the only technology the UK possesses that is carbon limited, reliable, efficient and produces anything like enough energy for our needs if we're ruling out oil/coal.

It's madness that we've wasted so much time on alternatives that simply don't come anywhere near it.

It's great to have all this clean electricity, but the vast majority of homes are heated by gas, and cooking too. There's no way these heat source pumps will take off here. Too expensive, take up too much room, ineffective and costly to run

Salt and turbines is an interesting combination. There is a Chinese project that has used liquified salt in a tower that feeds turbines as a way of storing solar energy and converting it into electricity when there is no sunlight.

They're not even solutions. Just pipe dreams.

Solar I can understand a bit to a certain scale. The idea that our energy needs can be met by a source as intermittent as wind is insane.

But we know that the basis of the technology works, and the source is infinite. Even SMR'S are new and developing tech, I don't think there are any operating in the western world yet.

Uranium mining has huge environmental impacts and at present the fuel needed for SMR's is only made at a commercial scale in Russia and China.

Nuclear has a place to play as a back up. As do potentially gas peaking plants for a time.

Mining the cobalt required for the magnets in wind turbines is also environmentally damaging. At least we get consistent use from Uranium. Which is widely available outside both those countries you mentioned. Australia currently possesses the largest reserves.

Sorry, but the idea that Nuclear should be a "back up" instead of the backbone of our energy needs rather than renewables is bonkers. People don't have cars and still do most of their daily commute on horses.

But only a minority of cobalt mined is used in green energy, it's mainly used in batteries in mobile phones, EV's and laptops so we're mining it anyway. Most of the pollution is due to incredibly bad practice in the DRC where most of the deposits are, with proper management it's impacts can be managed quite easily.

Uranium is primarily used for Nuclear generation and the waste is radioactive itself, it's far more difficult to manage, even through leaching removal the radioactive groundwater contamination can spread throughout the geology. Traditional mining is far worse. It has deposits across the world but only China and Russia commericially produce the fuel type used for SMR's - at present we're totally at their behest. That may change but there are no gurantees.

We need to be energy self sufficient, we can't do that if we rely on other countries. For now we need nuclear as a back up but no more than that. We know the hours of daylight we have, and we know when the wind is going to blow - onshore turbines generate about 75% of the time and offshore 90%. We know how much energy a solar farm will produce on a mid winter, rainy day. We know how much power can be stored in a Battery storage plant.

As SMR's can be switched on and off they are ideal as a back up. We don't need to rely on them.

Fusion power is absolutely the future. A virtually limitless source of energy using the most abundant element in the universe and the only “waste” product would be helium which we also need for other things. We are making painfully slow progress on it largely because of opposition from the oil lobby and lack of meaningful funding. It’s a technology we’ve had since the 1950’s but seventy years later we still don’t appear any closer to harnessing it fully.

We can easily replace oil for things like power generation and even transport but people often forget that oil is also used for pretty much everything we use every day. Plastics, lubrication, construction, even the asphalt in the roads.

I can’t envisage a time where we won’t need oil for at least some things. The fact we’ve made the active decision to entrust most imports of oil to states that actively want to see us destroyed whilst leaving billions of barrels untapped off our shores is madness.

If Fusion can be made to work then sure. In about 30/40 years when they've cracked the process and worked out how to build the reactors at effective cost scale then we'll be in a prime position to replace ageing nuclear power stations with Fusion ones.

Make no mistake though, we will have to build more nuclear in the meantime. Even a Government as hapless as this one with Ed the Prat on Energy has finally woken up to that. Full size, SMR, doesn't matter. Renewables just won't cut it. They don't cut it now, and that's before AI or electric vehicles have really begun to take over.

You can't run a First World country on wind and solar.

Yeah France has been pretty much fully nuclear for decades, is completely carbon neutral and can sell excess energy to its neighbours.

We are so behind the curve on so many things largely because of the dogmatic ideology of complete morons.

The problem is we have an energy minister who is as thick as the tress he wants to cut down to make way for more turbines ,and anyone who thinks his policies are good must be as thick as him.Close all our oil production down then buy in from another country at higher market rates all to achieve net zero so he can say that our contribution to carbon emissions ( which by the way we need to allow plant life to flourish) is all of nothing whilst the rest of the world continues to pump out volumes of the stuff and its not climate change ,its called the weather.

We gave had a wonderful month of wind generated electricity with a good stiff breeze every day creating over 50% of UK electricity needs. Ince we create more storage capacity night time wind will be 24 hour. Recently gas 5-15% of gas for electricity.

The problem is the "Dunke flaute" period s of no wind. That is when you need the gas I check energy dashboard every day and there's periods do not last long. I find t inspiring that trains in Wales will run on wind power once the lines are fully electrified.
