We're at the point where the decisions that will need to be made to repair the last 30 years of damage will be so unpopular with certain sections of the public that no Government will be brave enough to make them, so the cycle continues.
Pensions is a big one. We simply cannot keep paying a state pension to everyone. The country can't afford it, even more so if the insane triple lock is left in place. What we need to do is set a date after which nobody will get one. Say for people born in 2010. Gives them a working life to make their own provisions.
Certainly the Govt could make some payments into a private pension and let the market take care of the rest. £10,000 invested in the US Stock Market in 1980 would be worth over £1m today. A similar sum invested on the birth of any child today untouchable until they reach 60 with the understanding that no SP will be paid would surely be a better option? The money could be recouped by cutting Universal Credit and a reduction in the numbers receiving State Pension.
We could probably do with 30-40 years of benevolent dictatorship to implement stuff like this. Decisions that, in reality, should have been made decades ago. [Post edited 10 May 12:06]

Vast amounts of money were spent on public services between 1997 and 2008. Then the bill became due and Labour lost the election whilst admitting there was no money left.
It's easy to look like a millionaire when you're living on credit. That's what Socialist Governments do. Spend like crazy, offer nice payrises to their supporting unions, and then get voted out leaving someone else to sort out the mess. You see it with football. Club owners are always popular when they're splashing the cash and most people are too twp to ask where it's coming from. Then things turn nasty when the taps are turned off.
The Government from 2010-2024 had to deal with that, the fallout from the financial crisis, and then Covid. Unfortunately they weren't up to it. They didn't go anywhere near far enough to sort out the finances. Public sector headcount could have been slashed, Johnson pissed away a huge mandate and failed to deliver.
Now we have the Labour simpletons in power spending like crazy again and failing to grasp the simple reality that their tax base is tapped out and shrinking. |

Most of the money spent supporting banks during the financial crisis has long been recouped, yet things are still getting worse.
Absolutely the Cameron, May and Johnson Governments share some blame for having 14 years to try and fix the problem yet doing little but tinkering around the edges and calling it "Austerity", but the roots of the problem, indeed the roots of many of the major problems facing the UK today are Blair generated.

Of course they will demand and order that England provides Wales with its NHS specialties, despite being charged for Welsh water and demanding billions from England elsewhere..... ROYAL Air Force Sea Kings would also be nice for severe weather emergencies and specialised patient medi-vac to transport taff’s to Birmingham Queen Elizabeth for liver transplants etc.
Organs from English donors would be a priority, because Indy Wales will be playing separatist 'medieval' bad ass to English NHSBT after NHS divorce also! Wales is going places?

I think it has worked out very well for Reform. Wiped the floor with everyone in England and odds on to form the next Westminster government. Picked up enough seats in the Senedd to be the main opposition without any chance of being unpopular as the decision makers in the Senedd. If Plaid do a poor job in this term the door is open for next time when Reform will be in control in Westminster. Will Plaid win more seats in Wales at the next GE or will it be Reform I'm not sure, but it certainly won't be Labour picking up many seats in Wales or the UK in the future. | | | |

This currently seems to be how the majority of patriotic Welsh people feel, we want the best for the people living our country and a prosperous future. Individual politics and party loyalty is laid aside. Labour were voted out, the Conservatives lost the majority of their seats, Plaid were voted in and Reform are the main opposition. We move on and hope for improvement, if not it will be change again. We live in a different Wales from this week, deliver or the future of the Senedd is in danger. | | | |
